And the Oscar goes to…

Categories: Learn Something, Meme

I have seen 22 of the 80 pictures that have won Best Picture. Eleven of them were made before I was born. I even own two of them, although there are a few more I would like to add to that list, especially Chariots of Fire. For some reason I remember going to that movie in the theater, but I was two when it came out.

I managed to not see a single nominee for Best Picture this year though. I don’t really plan on seeing them later either. I just don’t see a lot of movies. Of the two movies I saw in the theater last year, only one of them was nominated for anything. I did see two other movies that were nominated for stuff after they came out on DVD though. And I hope to see another one that was nominated for some things later this week, in the theater even.

So why did I even watch the Oscars? I like looking at the pretty dresses. Although there were a few that really made me wonder what they were thinking when they picked that one.

Oh, and it seems to take me about two weeks to munch my way through a three pound bag of craisins.

Good night moon

Categories: Happy Things, Life

Tonight was a total lunar eclipse. And since I am fascinated with all things of a heavenly nature, I wanted to watch it. We went up the mountain a bit to get away from the city lights. It was beautiful. A lovely full moon that just inched away as the moon rose higher in the sky. I liked watching the color of the shadow.42D

The clouds came in during the totality, so I have no idea if the moon actually comes back or not.

My Harry Potter bookshelf

Categories: Books, Happy Things

Previously my Harry Potter bookshelf had these on it:

Then I got a box from my friend Amanda this week. She used crumpled construction paper to pack around it. I liked the colors.

There was a card inside the box that she drew herself. I think it is real cute.

Now I have these on my Harry Potter shelf too. (My sister got me the first four in a boxed set for Christmas a few years ago.)

But I need a bigger Harry Potter bookshelf because I also have all of these I need to get on it some how too.

Hurray for friends who go to England and bring me back things.

Happy Valentine’s Day

love noteI feel so blessed to have so many wonderful people in my life. I love them all. I have the best family. I have great friends. Each of them has made me who I am in their own way.

I hope they all feel loved today, and every day.

And now I’m done being cheesy.

The nose knows

Categories: Health, Learn Something

I’ve had a problem with my nose being extra runny for a long time. It’s very annoying. I’m not sick, I know that. And I’ve noticed that it seems to get worse at some times than at others.

Today while randomly following links, this article caught my attention: Perpetual Sniffles.

My joy and delight! That has to be what I have. I have vasomotor rhinitis. If there’s not a cure, at least there’s a name. Going into a house with the air conditioner on will do it. Eating does it, especially spicy food. Stress increases it. I really hate it when my nose starts to run at the most inopportune moments, but it does. I always have to have a tissue with me just to dab at the corner of my nose.

Yup, it’s annoying. But at least it’s a named annoyance.

Changing Perception

Yesterday I had the opportunity to teach an under-graduate class about cognitive theories. To help me prepare for it, I went back and pulled out the books I used when I was first learning these ideas as an undergrad. It was interesting for me to reflect back on my feelings on these topics back then. I thought they were interesting ideas. One or two caught my attention at the time. But nothing really grabbed me. They were classes to take and little beyond that.

I am very glad that what I wanted to do with my life then is not what I must do forever.

I do not think it was in the presentation of the topics that they really did not seem exciting to me then. I think it was where I was at in my life at the time.

But I am looking forward to spending the next big chunk of my life delving deeply into those same topics I passed over earlier.

This is the power point I used for my lecture yesterday: Cognitive Theories

Stupid Spider

Categories: Science & Tech, Venting

Seems like a spider has found my site. More than half my hits each day are from this stupid spider trying to post spam comments on my blog. Akismet catches them, so they never actually make it to the blog, but enough is enough. So today I changed the format of the blog just a bit. For now I’ll need people who want to comment to register first. You will have to be logged in to make a comment. I hope this doesn’t make things more difficult for those of you honest people full of integrity who read my blog. And hopefully the stupid thing will get tired of it eventually and just go away and leave me alone.

Someone needs to invent an effective internet bug spray. I have a spray under my sink that gets rid of bugs at home. Where’s the can for my blog?
