Christmas Letter 2009

Categories: Family, Happy Things

Since 2004 I have put a copy of my Christmas letter up on my website (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008).

This year at Christmas letter writing time, I’m not just writing one for me though. So this year, you can go read a short Christmas letter on the website I share with my husband, Brett. Because the fact that we even need that website is the whole story for the year.

Brett & Lisa’s 2009 Christmas Letter.

If you want more details, I’m sure they’re around on my blog somewhere.

Merry Christmas!

Marathon Follow-Up

Categories: Exercise

Now that I can walk normally again, here is a follow up to the marathon last week.

If you look at these times, and I tell you that my right knee started hurting about the five mile mark, and a blister ate my left little toe during mile 7, burst some miles later (as evidenced by the stain on my sock when we got home, I kept looking down and expecting to see a red stain on my shoe at that toe during the race), and then ate my toe all over again, these really aren’t that bad of splits. And I’m proud to say that I ran at least some part of every single mile (mile 20 was more walking than running, but the rest were at least half run).

My toe hurt the rest of the week. And because I’d run the whole marathon unconsciously trying to protect it, my left knee started hurting almost as soon as I finished the marathon. I was able to walk around the house without shoes on for the most part for the next few days because then the shoes wouldn’t put pressure on my toe and make me walk funny and thus make my knee hurt. But if I had to put shoes on and go anywhere I came back in a lot of pain. And when I’d sleep I’d twist my knee funny rolling over and wake up in pain. Not so much fun. Brett thinks I’m crazy.42D

But somewhere during Friday afternoon I realized I was walking normally, that I could stand on my foot and it wouldn’t hurt. It almost happened suddenly. It felt great all through Sunday. And then on Sunday it started to just itch like crazy. All that new skin on my toe I guess. It still looks weird today. But it only itches slightly, and doesn’t hurt at all.

When I finished I said I wasn’t running again till January. I think I might go out for a short jog this week though. Can’t stay away from it too long.

Solstice

Categories: Family, Musings, Relationships

The solstice can be defined as when the sun is at its furthest from the celestial equator. This means that in June it is the longest day for the northern hemisphere with the sun as far north as it goes and in December it is the shortest day for the northern hemisphere with the sun as far south as it will go.

However, it can also be defined as, “a furthest or culminating point; a turning point.”

At the moment of the June solstice this year my life definitely reached a turning point. At that moment, overlooking the city lights and with the stars above us, Brett asked me to be his wife. I don’t think you get much more turning point than that.42D

At the moment of the solstice today I called him on the phone at work and we talked for a bit. After dinner we drove back up the mountain to where he’d proposed and enjoyed the view again. Many of the topics our conversation touched on six months ago just happened to come up again this evening as we sat there together. Our relationship has grown, it hasn’t really completely changed directions.

So maybe our life did take a turning point that solstice, but if it was a turn, it was a natural turn in our path, not an abrupt one that makes you lean against the side of the car as you go around it.

I wonder where our next turn will take us.

The messages of the season

Categories: Gospel

Joy to the World.

Peace on Earth.

Those are the messages of this season. They are the messages the angels brought and shared with shepherds. And they are the messages for us today.

When I think of Joy, when I think of Peace, I also think of Hope and Faith. The four go together so well. And the four all point to Love, the Love of a Heavenly Father who gave His Son, and the Love of a Son who gave His life, so that we might have Joy, Peace, Hope, Faith, and Love in this life.

That is the message of the season.

And while it is a little different than most other versions of the message of the season, I hope this message will help you to feel more Joy, more Peace, more Hope, more Faith, and more Love.

Because I’m worth it!

In the last month I have gotten married, run a marathon, and finished another semester of graduate school.

So this afternoon I went and got an hour and a half massage. Brett said I’m worth it.42D

He also agreed that I’m worth the price of the good quality toilet paper.

I really am worth the “finer” things in life. 😉

Top 10 of 2009

Categories: Family, Meme, Musings, Relationships

Time Magazine did a The Top 10 of Everything of 2009. And they certainly did get everything. And it got me thinking. If I were to make a bunch of “top 10” lists for my year, what kind of lists would I have and what would be on them?

Maybe a top ten list of movies you saw? Top ten favorite songs for the year? Top ten vacations (did I even go on ten? do trips across town count?)? Top ten books you read? Top ten papers you wrote (okay, maybe that only applies to me)? Top ten things you accomplished? A general top ten of all things?

I’ll have to think of all my lists, and I challenge you to do the same.

Right now though, I know that the number one thing I did all year, out of everything, was marry Brett, one month ago today.

Nothing I did this year could ever top that.

Big run. Small thoughts

At the finishCccccold!

Yes! I got the last of the toilet paper!

Yeah for people who sit in front of their house and cheer!

I thought my knee would last further than this.

Blister ate my toe.

Stupid head wind!!

Best dressed cheerer!I’m thinking I like ones with more spectators.

Stupid head wind!!

Old people on bikes patrolling the race are cute.

“Nuptials” is a strange word after you’ve run twenty miles.

If I could sit down at an aid station without having to sit there with the high school girls volunteering who would annoy me, I would just stop now.

The ambulance seemed a fitting back drop (no, I did not need it).Stupid head wind!!

I just really want to chew something! Wonder if Brett would randomly grab the pretzels on his way here.

LOVE the woman who gave me licorice!

What bright person decided mile 25 should be all up hill?!? Definitely not a person who ever ran a marathon.

If I had the legs I had at the beginning of the race, I could set a PR. But I don’t.

We like turtles! (maybe I would've run faster if I drew a rabbit)I will pass that woman if it’s the last thing I do! (I did!)

I have the best dressed cheerer here!

What bright person decided the race should end with a “sprint” up a sandy drive? Same bright person as before?

Blister ate my toe, again!! (Little toe is twice its size, because of a blister that practically wraps all the way around it, and the stain on my sock shows that there was one that popped there and then another one grew.)

Lots of comments from volunteers. Lots of comments from runners.
