Marathon Follow-Up

Now that I can walk normally again, here is a follow up to the marathon last week.

If you look at these times, and I tell you that my right knee started hurting about the five mile mark, and a blister ate my left little toe during mile 7, burst some miles later (as evidenced by the stain on my sock when we got home, I kept looking down and expecting to see a red stain on my shoe at that toe during the race), and then ate my toe all over again, these really aren’t that bad of splits. And I’m proud to say that I ran at least some part of every single mile (mile 20 was more walking than running, but the rest were at least half run).

My toe hurt the rest of the week. And because I’d run the whole marathon unconsciously trying to protect it, my left knee started hurting almost as soon as I finished the marathon. I was able to walk around the house without shoes on for the most part for the next few days because then the shoes wouldn’t put pressure on my toe and make me walk funny and thus make my knee hurt. But if I had to put shoes on and go anywhere I came back in a lot of pain. And when I’d sleep I’d twist my knee funny rolling over and wake up in pain. Not so much fun. Brett thinks I’m crazy.42D

But somewhere during Friday afternoon I realized I was walking normally, that I could stand on my foot and it wouldn’t hurt. It almost happened suddenly. It felt great all through Sunday. And then on Sunday it started to just itch like crazy. All that new skin on my toe I guess. It still looks weird today. But it only itches slightly, and doesn’t hurt at all.

When I finished I said I wasn’t running again till January. I think I might go out for a short jog this week though. Can’t stay away from it too long.
