What I learned about daffodils

Categories: Family, Learn Something, Random

My mom taught us a song when we were little that has a line that says “I love the daffodils.” The song just came to my mind, so I thought I’d look up daffodils on-line. I didn’t know they were poisonous.

Botanical.com has some information about them: http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/n/narcis01.html

Me, The Cook

Categories: Family, Food, Health, Musings

It is generally accepted that I do not know how to cook. As the Relief Society President in my ward, the bishop was known on much more than one occasion to inform the ward of that as well. And I thought that was just fine. People don’t need to think they need to be excellent cooks to be a good person.

My brother, however, is an excellent cook. He always has been. The bar-b-que sauce he made when we were younger was better than anything else I’ve ever had. I believe he got the cooking genes in my family.

I cook well enough though. I have been living on my own for more than ten years now, and I’m not dead yet, so I can cook well enough to live. But I am no gourmet chef by a long shot. And I consider that perfectly acceptable and I am happy with that aspect of my talents. Yet recently it kept me up at night.

There are three meals that I am known for – homemade from scratch chicken and vegetable soup with breadsticks; Waikiki meatballs, rice, homemade dinner rolls, green salad, Jell-O; and lemon chicken with rice, green salad, and rolls or breadsticks. I do those three meals extremely well and think they are pretty classy. But they are not the only things I know how to cook.

So instead of counting sheep, I stayed up about two months ago counting all the things I know how to cook. In my mind, I separated them into two different groups – things I can cook completely from scratch, and those that I take something partially prepared and add my own special flare or whatever. It got to be quite a very long list. And I felt very pleased with what I can do.

Now if I could get someone to clean up after me, I’d probably cook more.

On a Scale of 1-10…

Categories: Health, Musings, Questions, Venting

When you go to the doctor because you are in pain, they ask you how you would rank your pain on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain imaginable. It has recently occurred to me that it is a totally subjective scale. I realized this because my definition of a 10 has really changed over the years.

My senior year of high school I dislocated my kneecap. Not realizing that I could injure myself so severely simply playing “Do You Love Your Neighbor,” it took about three weeks and my knee swelling to the size of a small cantaloupe before I went to the doctor. At that time in my life, that pain would’ve been a 10. I would not have been able to imagine anything worse.

Two years later, I sprained my shoulder and back. At that time, the pain I had in my knee might have gone down to a 7 or 8 because there were times when I hurt so bad I did not want to breathe. The expansion of my lungs made the muscles in my back move. And that movement was not something that my body wanted to deal with. That was the worst pain I could imagine.

The pain in my back and shoulders pretty much went away for about four years before slowly starting to come back. I have again had times when I hurt so bad all I could do was quietly cry and try not to move. Those moments are my 10s now. But I have some degree of pain almost constantly in my life. And because it is such a constant, even though it might have been a level 7 or 8 before, it’s dropped down to probably a 3 or 4 any more. And that’s pretty much the level I live my life now.

And from what I’ve heard, giving birth some day might shift my personal 1-10 scale again. So it is a completely subjective scale. It is hard to understand just what a number on such a scale could tell a doctor, except maybe the level of nuisance the pain is at that time. Except that does not mean I like the fact that I live at this level of pain just because I would put it at a 3 or a 4 most days. So really, what’s the point of the scale?

“Significant” Valentine

Categories: Musings, Relationships

I heard on the radio the other day that on-line dating services report the period between January 31st and February 14th to be their busiest time of year for activity and new accounts. Presumably this is because so many people do not want to be alone on Valentine’s Day. I have never understood that.

For me, I would rather be alone on Valentine’s Day than spend it with someone I just barely met. It is a day to spend money on someone you care about, which is just silly to begin with. So why would you want to spend money on someone who met in the last two weeks and hardly know?

I myself have only spent Valentine’s Day with someone who means something special to me once in my life. And I have never felt like I was missing out. I love to go to the store and buy a box of cheap Valentines and give them to all of my friends, just like when I was in elementary school. I really like to go to the stores a day or two after the 14th and get chocolate for real cheap. I find it interesting how expensive roses get for those first two weeks of February.

I am not anti-Valentine’s Day. I do not wear black and celebrate “Singles Awareness Day.” But I can’t understand how someone would consider their whole year a wash if they didn’t have someone “significant” to celebrate the 14th of February with. And I really don’t understand how someone you’ve just barely met could be considered “significant.” My friends and family are all significant to me because they all impact my life in some positive way or another. And that is enough for me to celebrate knowing them ALL on the 14th of February.

Love is not a tomato

Categories: Musings, Relationships

I have heard many people say that they will never love someone the way they loved their first love. Well, I would hope not. That would be real sad. They feel that the love they felt that first time was a pure love untainted by life, but it was smashed and ruined when it didn’t work out. I think they have it all backwards. Love is not a tomato that can be smashed and then left to rot and turn green with jealousy/fungus. Lust would be a tomato.

Love is more like a precious metal, the most precious in the world. And that first experience with love is like mining the metal right out of the mountain. It’s not pure. It hasn’t been tried and tested and refined in the fire of life. Married people say that they love their spouse more now then they did when they met, and more than they ever thought possible. That doesn’t sound like a tomato that would get mushy and gross with time, but something much more substantial that lasts through time, that is strong enough to withstand everything life throws at it. That love you have with you on your dying breath is the strongest love, not the love you first felt when you were young and thought you knew what life was about.

In short, love is not a tomato. And what you think is love that first time, will be nothing compared to the love you find that lasts.

Insomnia

Just about everything I’ve seen about troubles falling asleep says that instead of lying in bed and trying to fall asleep, if you are actually alert you should get out of bed and go do something.

What if it’s been several nights in a row that it’s 3am and you have to get up for work in 3 hours and won’t have time to nap or anything and will be driving a lot and you know that if you don’t get to sleep some time soon you’re going to completely crash in a day or two and everyone you deal with between now and then is going to have to deal with your crabbiness?

Is it really wise to get up then, knowing you’ll be up all night if you do?

I also know that if I turned on the tv and turned off the lights I could fall asleep on the couch, it wouldn’t be deep sleep, but it would be sleep. But then because my body wasn’t put together right, I won’t be able to move when I wake up.

I hate when it’s that early in the morning and I haven’t gone to bed yet because I know that doesn’t mean I can sleep in a little extra in the morning but I have to get up because we live in a world that thinks people should be awake and at school/work from 8-4. I’m NOT that person. I would love it if school was from 12-6. I’ve always been that way.

Okay, I’m crabby and tired and haven’t slept well in at least a week. Can you tell? If I do manage to fall asleep, I’m awake around 4 or 5 in the morning.

A geeky post
