“Significant” Valentine

I heard on the radio the other day that on-line dating services report the period between January 31st and February 14th to be their busiest time of year for activity and new accounts. Presumably this is because so many people do not want to be alone on Valentine’s Day. I have never understood that.

For me, I would rather be alone on Valentine’s Day than spend it with someone I just barely met. It is a day to spend money on someone you care about, which is just silly to begin with. So why would you want to spend money on someone who met in the last two weeks and hardly know?

I myself have only spent Valentine’s Day with someone who means something special to me once in my life. And I have never felt like I was missing out. I love to go to the store and buy a box of cheap Valentines and give them to all of my friends, just like when I was in elementary school. I really like to go to the stores a day or two after the 14th and get chocolate for real cheap. I find it interesting how expensive roses get for those first two weeks of February.

I am not anti-Valentine’s Day. I do not wear black and celebrate “Singles Awareness Day.” But I can’t understand how someone would consider their whole year a wash if they didn’t have someone “significant” to celebrate the 14th of February with. And I really don’t understand how someone you’ve just barely met could be considered “significant.” My friends and family are all significant to me because they all impact my life in some positive way or another. And that is enough for me to celebrate knowing them ALL on the 14th of February.
