Can I get a Time Turner over here?

Categories: Education, Questions

I’m really interested to see how my class schedule is going to work this Fall. Registration is open now, so I thought I’d take a look at the classes that are being offered and when. There are six classes that I would like to take, that would be interesting to me, that would be good for my program. And four of them are being offered at the exact same time! How do I attend four classes at once? That is just crazy! Apparently Thursday evening is a popular time for classes in the Fall. My advisor should have a lot of fun with this problem.

A Beautiful Easter Morn’

I started the day by driving to the edge of town to watch the sunrise. I think I’m ready for a nap now. Someone, a few years ago, said that watching the sunrise was an Easter tradition they had. I liked it. I would rather have that tradition than egg hunts. At least the sunrise has some semblance of relationship to the holiday. I wrote out my notes for my Relief Society lesson while I sat there. And then I read the four chapters in the Gospels about the morning of the resurrection while the sun came up over the mountains and shined light on everything. It was a beautiful morning.

There was a group of people gathered there at the trail head where I was parked. It seemed they had a sunrise service for some religion. They sang some hymns and the man in charge said some words. Looking at them, I couldn’t help but think that the man there had no real authority to lead a church. He could gather friends together to talk about Christ and His gospel, but he had no authority to really help those people spiritually. I am grateful that I know where to find that authority.

This evening I’m going to cook the lamb chops I found at the store yesterday for dinner. I’ve never understood why ham is the traditional food for a holiday that originated with Jewish tradition. If someone can tell me why that is, that would be nice.42D

I opened my yo-yo maker yesterday and quickly made up some spring flowers with my scraps. These went together so fast. I used ribbon to attach the button centers. Four of them have a felt leaf, the other has a fabric leaf that has two pieces of fabric held together with fusible webbing. I glued the pink ones to tiny clothes pins. The blue on with a yellow center is sewn to a pin and I haven’t decided what I’m going to do with the other two yet.

Not My Type

Some say that it is being picky to have a list of things that you will not accept in a potential mate. But really, would you want any of these things on your list?

Every time there is a story on the news about some relationship gone very bad, I add that to my list. The latest item is a man who emailed nude photos of his ex-girlfriend to a couple thousand (15,000) people and sent her threatening text messages. I do not want to date a guy like that. Not that there are any pictures of me like that out there to begin with, but it’s the principle of the matter.

I do not want to date a guy who would run over me with a truck while I’m out on a run. I do not want to date a guy who would lie to me about things and then kill me to cover up his lies. I do not want to date a guy who would not recognize that I might have gone crazy and let me camp out in a bathroom for two years.

I also think that men should not rival monkeys for hairiness. And I think that men should wear their pants so that the waist line is parallel to the floor and not at a 45 degree angle to the floor. Even if he is a big man, his pants should be parallel to the floor.

I’m okay with a lot of things, but there are certain things that I’m just not even going to consider.

Clean and Beautiful

I have found that I feel more alert and even more beautiful when my house is clean. This morning I had not gotten dressed or showered or done more with my hair than pull it back in a pony tail. But I took out the trash, did the dishes, cleaned the kitchen and straightened the rest of the house. And I felt real good about myself, beautiful even.

Then I went for a good run, about 7.5 minutes per mile. And when I finished, even though I was wearing my running clothes and was sweating a bit from the run, I felt very beautiful. A clean house and a good run – I’m a new person.

Now, if only my water heater was more than 2.5 feet tall, I could take a long luxurious shower and really pamper myself.

Caught in the middle

I’ve seen this on a few other blogs and thought I’d give it a go. But I added the stuff at the end because I thought it should extend equally in both directions. I have this thing with balance and palindromes and such.

20 years ago: 17 March 1988. We’d moved to Santa Fe the summer before. I was in fourth grade. I’d spent several months early ditching math because I didn’t like that they were sending me to a sixth grade class to do math and hadn’t talked to me about it. By this time I was okay with math though.

10 years ago: 17 March 1998. It was my second year at BYU. I’d applied to the elementary education program. Probably been accepted too.

5 years ago: 17 March 2003. This was the end of my first year teaching elementary school. I was really starting to understand the joke that the best three reasons to teach were June, July, and August. I’d started the year with very little idea of what in the world I was doing, by this time I’d settled in to it a bit and was starting to feel like I could do it. I was working my way in to the community of the school as well and finding my place with everyone else.

3 years ago: 17 March 2005. I was the Relief Society president in my ward. I was getting ready to take the GRE that summer and apply to start graduate school the following year. I was still teaching elementary school.

1 year ago: 17 March 2007. I was taking my second belly dance class. Still teaching elementary school, but I was starting to get ready to leave. I’d decided to continue with a Doctorate. I was 1.5 semesters shy of my Masters.

So far this year: I’ve moved to Tucson. I’ve started a Doctorate degree.

Yesterday: I went to Church. I worked on my journal. I finished watching Lagaan from the night before. I watched the Church DVD about the testimonies of Christ. My visiting teachers came. I ate some apple pie. I started yet another book.

Today: I worked on making a DVD. I went running. I read a book. I talked to my mom in New York and a friend on his way to Moab.

Later tonight: I’m going to read some more and take a nice warm shower and cook something for dinner. I’ll probably burn a CD for my mom too.

Tomorrow: I’m going to the post office to mail probably three packages. I’m going to call around and get some estimates on replacing my windshield. I’ll go running again too.

This year I hope to: Get settled here in Tucson and make some progress on this latest degree. I’ll also be running the Deseret News Marathon and qualifying for Boston.

3 years from now: I hope to be pretty much finished with my course work for my Doctorate and getting deep into my thesis. I’d also really like to be married in three years.

5 years from now: I hope to be finished with my Doctorate degree and know what I’m doing with the rest of my life. And as long as I’m married by then, I’d like a kid or two as well.

10 years from now: Definitely not in school any more.

20 years from now: Getting ready to send my own kids to school.

I think I’m just a little too excited about this. But they are opening a Tucanos in Salt Lake this April. If you register on the website they’ll give you a $10 gift card to use within 8 weeks of them opening. And I will be in Salt Lake within 8 weeks of them opening. They also send you a 2 for 1 thing for your birthday if they know when it is.

Comida boa!! Um pedaço do céu.

sunTomorrow is when the majority of the United States will change the time on their clocks to be one hour ahead of what they say right now. It’s called Daylight Saving, because you save the daylight for after work rather than before so you can enjoy it more during the summer.

Every year there are people who complain about it. I have never understood that. I remember having to explain to someone that the day suddenly wasn’t 25 hour long with the change. That it was still three hours between when we woke up and when we left the house. The day was the same length, we were just calling where the sun was in the sky by a different name. So no complaining about the change! I think complaining is silly.

But I do want to make sure everyone knows that I now live in a place that does not follow this. And that is strange to me. I have always followed along with the Mountain time zone. But no longer. I still live in the Mountain time zone, but I’m stuck in standard now. In a strange way it’s like the movie Ground Hog Day. I’m just going to be doing standard over and over and over again without ever changing.

I’ve decided it makes sense here though. During the summer it’s really too hot to go outside till the sun starts to go down. So if the sun goes down earlier, there is still plenty of evening left to go out without it being really hot. It will just be dark.

In short, I’m going to be three hours behind you till November, Mom.
