Let it snow!

It was only partly cloudy at 7:30 this evening. Now that it is almost 10:00pm, it is completely cloudy. But Weather.com says it’s only 52 outside. That’s actually just a little cold for here compared to the last week. In fact, it’s so cold that the newspaper just reported that the school district is going to start monitoring the weather at 4am tomorrow to see if they need to close schools tomorrow.

They’re forecasting almost a whole inch of snow!

I can’t help but smirk at the entire city. Come on!?!

But I’ll be up tomorrow morning with my camera to see if it actually happens. I’ll have to do it on foot though. There’s a possibility of roads being closed because of this nasty winter storm.

An Ode to Thumbs

I’ll never know how so many live
Their lives just fine without
The wonder of opposable thumbs.

More than just a simple result
Of years of hard evolution
Truly a modern opposable miracle.

For tying shoes or doing buttons,
For grabbing pens and using staplers,
For holding books and turning pages,

For pouring milk and opening jars,
For cutting cloth or paper,
For slicing meat and tomatoes,

For all of these and so much more,
There’s nothing more agreeable
Than thumbs that are opposable.

Remind me to never take my thumbs for granted again. This not having use of one of them is hard.

My favorite things

When Oprah does her “favorite things” show, she gives everyone in the audience her favorite things. I can’t really do that. But these are some things that make me happy and some of the things that are on my “some day” list.

I love socks. And the socks at Sock Dreams make me fairly giddy. They have fun colors and stripes and the knee highs and it’s just so much fun!

If I could write

You need opposable thumbs to write, and I don’t have two of those right now. But I do like to write. These are my favorite things to write with. I’m a bit particular with what I use too.

For highlighters I like to use Sharpie in yellow, none of that fluorescent junk. When I find them I usually buy several because most places only sell the fluorescent ones.

Get understanding

Last year I set the goal for myself to read 52 books during the year. And I did! I read 54 actually. And it was great. The variety of books I read really surprised me, but I learned so much. I challenged a few friends to do it as well.

This year, the Book Guardian has issued a different challenge. She suggested reading one book for each letter of the alphabet, and to make it more interesting, do them in order. These will all be nonfiction books too.

My A book was about American Teenagers. I kind of had to read it for my program, but it still counts, and it was real interesting.

Then I found myself standing at a computer at the U of A library for half an hour trying to think of a B topic that they would have in the library so I could get going on my next book. (I had to laugh when I tried looking up books about the Bolshevik Revolution, you should try it. The PC-ness of it is hilarious.) I eventually settled on a book about the Boston Tea Party. It’s already interesting and I’m only on page 16.

Now, so I don’t have to spend another half hour trying to think up topics that they would have in the library (Haven’t I already posted about how pathetic this library is at least once? Maybe not, but I need to. Oh how I miss the BYU library), I’m asking for help.

Give me topics for the rest of the letters, and bonus brownie points if you can find a good book on that topic at the U of A library.

2009 Injury Report (and a few random things)

It’s official. I have been injured in 2009 (Already? & E ao que sofre dores), and while it is a stupid injury, I did it good. After three weeks of my thumb hurting, and in some senses it almost seemed to be getting worse, I finally called a doctor and went in today.

It was teaching day at the sports clinic, so I got three doctor visits for the price of one. First the nurse took my basic statistics. Then student number one came in and pulled and pushed and poked and asked me if it hurt, and it did. And then she went out and they had a pow-wow. Then she came back with student number two and he pulled and pushed and poked and asked me if it hurt, and it did. And then they both left and had a pow-wow. And then the nurse came back and double checked what insurance I had for paper work. Then both students and the doctor came in and the doctor pulled and pushed and poked and asked me if it hurt, and it did.

Being political

I have never been to a political rally before. It was quite interesting. There were roughly 2,000 people there. Most were wearing black. Most were students at the three state universities. As I walked from my car to the rally area (ironically, I ended up parking at the state education building), the people I passed saw my sign and said encouraging things about what we were doing.
