Trick or treating adult style

Categories: Random

I went “trick or treating” yesterday, adult style. It’s so much more fun now. I went to Wal-Mart and bought a big bag of my favorite candy. No having to walk around all night to get candy. No having to deal with all the types of candies I don’t like. Just a huge bag of everything I like.

Except the banana flavored ones. Anyone want to trade my banana flavored ones?

And if you see a bag of smarties bigger than just the 17 oz size (not even a pound!!), let me know. I like having those on hand throughout the year. They’re great to stick in a scripture tote for church on Sunday.

Does milk roll off a nebula?

Categories: Science & Tech

Just for kicks and giggles, here’s a conversation Brett and I had by email today. And this isn’t all that weird for us. Some background information, a few several weeks or so ago we watched a Nova Science Now about the Hubble and have been talking about Hubble shots since. There’s also a side story with actual water rolling off an actual duck’s back.42D

Lisa: M1: The Crab Nebula from Hubble. I thought you’d enjoy a Hubble shot.

Brett: I do, thanks. Horseheads… crabs… do you think you could find me a duck nebula? And maybe make it a bit smaller so I can bring it home with me?

Lisa: Would a small duck head work? http://www.ne.jp/asahi/stellar/scenes/object_e/ngc2359.htm

Brett: Is there a reason we have to decapitate two-thirds of our nebulae?

Lisa: I don’t know. But if you let me think about it for a while I’m sure I could come up with a good reason.

Brett: It just seems a little barbaric, that’s all. And whole ducks are more fun to play with than duck heads. On a related (?) topic, I just realized that the “lax” in “galaxy” comes from the same root as the “lac” in “lactose intolerant.”

Lisa: Perhaps it isn’t us that are decapitating the nebula. Some nebula are the results of exploded stars. So maybe the duck or horse were whole at some time, but then they blew up. So that would mean that in some place of the universe there is a duck’s back (wonder if galactic water rolls off it?) and a horse’s behind as well. We shall have to look and see what we can find.

Brett: 🙂 I would agree with that, except I would more expect to find galactic milk rolling off it.

Lisa: Does milk have enough similar properties to water to roll off a duck? Would the cohesion properties of milk work the same way?

Brett: Only one way to find out. Next time we’re at the Desert Museum, we need to smuggle in some milk.

Lisa: I like the way you think. There are probably other ways to find out too though.

I think this is a great conversation for The International Year of Astronomy. :star:

Again with the bad timing

Categories: Venting

Back in August I wrote a blog venting about how some things were just happening at the exact wrong time. Time to vent about the timing of a few things again.

I rarely drive. Maybe three days a week (Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday). A week ago I was running wedding errands and my car wouldn’t start at one stop. I quietly thought good thoughts about my car and it started and everything was fine. Wednesday of this week it started protesting when I would start it. Tonight, no starting at all. Now, I was going to go get a routine oil change and tire rotation before driving to Utah in two weeks. I guess it’ll be more than that now. Major car repairs were not on the to-do list right now. And major car repairs were certainly not in our budget right now.

Next, I’m out of hot glue sticks. How this has happened I have no idea. I feel like I’m betraying all my mom taught me about having a two year supply. I do have the two year supply of Jell-O, but somehow I’ve managed to run out of glue sticks. And just when I had a whole bunch of stuff to glue too!

And just other little things that keep adding up.

But I have two, um, one and a half, containers of chocolate frosting and a spoon with a glass of cold milk. And Brett is absolutely amazing at helping me keep perspective and relaxing. In fact, he brought me a dozen roses on Thursday just because. And my apartment smells so good because of it.

They fit right in on the table where I’m working on our wedding flowers.

I just don’t want to deal with my car right now.42D

Ribbon turtles!!!

Categories: Happy Things

My favorite animal is elephants. Brett’s favorite is dolphins. So we’re having turtles at our wedding. Because it makes sense. There’s actually a whole long story to it, but the short version can be found in this clip which Brett finds absolutely hilarious and quotes randomly. :turtle: 42D

Erika makes some amazing hair bows and sells them at Bow Sweet. She has ones that are called “korkers” that I think are real cool looking. So I asked her to make me one in green, purples, and white.

korker

This is the first photo of it. She added a bit more purple to it before sending it to me. I love it.

But she also makes cool ribbon sculptures. Things like flowers and butterflies and pumpkins and goldfish. I really need to figure out when I could wear a ribbon goldfish in my hair.

So I asked her if she could figure out how to make a turtle. And she did!! She made me two, one with a hair clip and the other with a pin back. Check him out!

There will be other turtles too, but I can’t show those ones yet.

Happy Birthday Miss Giggles

Categories: Happy Things, Proclamations, Science & Tech

Yeah!!! Miss Giggles is six today! After six years, and with a bit of putting the name around, yesterday I hit 30,000 hits. Yeah! A big thanks for that goes to my mom.

This has been a great diversion. And I thank all of you for being a part of it. Things will probably change a bit next month when more things start happening on our new site – Ooh Shemo. But Miss Giggles is going to stick around. I imagine I’ll always need a place to put random thoughts. I’m not going anywhere.

By the power I have here, I hereby declare today, October 20th, to be Miss Giggles Day!

And this, this is post #700 on the blog (and the blog isn’t even 6 yet!).

In honor of the 700 posts and the 30,000 hits and the 6 years and to thank all of you for reading me so much, I’m going to do a giveaway. Leave a comment here (you have to be registered to comment) and you’ll be entered to win either a quilted ball or a little monster, your choice (colors are your choice too), made by Miss Giggles (me!). A random comment will be chosen at midnight Friday. The prize will be shipped at some point after I’m married.

Orion rising

Categories: Happy Things, Life, Science & Tech

Orion is rising again. He’s always very comforting to me, possibly my favorite constellation. And it’s more than the fact that he’s easy to recognize. He’s the only constellation I’ve been able to see my whole life. Although for a year and a half he was standing on his head.

Normally you look towards the southern sky in the fall to see Orion. When I was in Brasil, if I looked as far north in the sky as I could, I could see him. He’d just be upside down. There was something about knowing the same stars were over me that was very connecting for me.

That upside down thing had me confused for almost a year when I was in Brasil though, especially because the moon was also upside down from what I expected. I had never consciously paid attention to what direction the moon’s phases went before, but I knew that something was not right with it down there. When I figured it out, all was right in the world again.

I can’t look up at the heavens and not be in awe of their majesty. These are some amazing photos of the wonders of the heavens that were put up on Astronomy Photo of the Day recently. Just how amazing are the heavens!?

Here it comes!!

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the count down on the side is now down to just days. No more months.

countdown

Yeah!! :woot: 😀

And there are how many things I have to do between now and then? Including two class presentations?

You know what though? If in 30 days Brett and I are married, the rest of it won’t matter at all (except the class presentations, those kind of have to get done).42D
