Miss Giggles Responds to California Supreme Court Same-Sex Marriage Decision

Categories: Family, Gospel, Politics, Relationships

On Thursday, the California Supreme Court ruled on the issue of marriage. They said that same-sex couples have a right to marry. I’m disappointed with the state of California.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints issued their response the next day. I think it is very well worded. It is an emotional issue. But marriage is not what man defines it to be. Marriage is what God defines it to be. And only marriage between a man and a woman has been ordained of God. Anything else is man’s perversion of a sacred organization.

In 1995, the LDS Church issued The Family: A Proclamation to the World. It is a beautiful document. It wonderfully describes marriage, the divine nature of each of us, the roles of men and women within the family, how to strengthen the home, and warns what will happen to society if the family is not supported. I believe all of that. Twice it states how central to God’s plan marriage and the family are.

I look forward to the day when I will be able to enjoy the blessings of marriage. And I will work to make sure that marriage, whether I enjoy it in this life or the next, remains as it was set up by God before the foundation of the world.

Bored, but Proud

I spent two days this week sitting through graduation ceremonies. And they weren’t even mine (and won’t be for several more years). The speakers were okay, not completely boring, but the whole long ceremonies were both two hours long, a good long two hours each.

The University of Arizona seems to be on a bit of a space kick right now. The two speakers were Dr. Kathie Olsen who worked for NASA and now works for NSF, and Astronaut Frank Borman, who flew on Apollo 8. The space kick could easily be explained by the fact that the Mars probe the university designed is supposed to land on Mars next week.

But I was glad I was able to go. I take pride in what those I know do. There is a definite sense of accomplishment with getting a degree. And I like seeing that happen. It’s a privilege, I think, for me to be able to watch my friends accomplish something as big as a college degree.

I remember my dad doing homework for his Masters degree. Both of my parents graduated from college. My grandparents too. My brother and sister both have done some amazing stuff during and after college and I am very proud of them and love to tell people about them and brag a bit. I’m related to some really smart people.

Congratulations to everyone I know who got a degree this Spring. And congratulations to everyone I know who has ever gotten a degree as well. I’m proud to know you. Even if it does occasionally mean sitting through some pretty boring ceremonies. 42D

Moving forward

I caught part of the PBS show American Experience tonight. They are doing a series about The Presidents of the United States and tonight it was the first half of the part about President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

They had a quote from his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, that really stood out to me and I’m glad I heard it. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while and I really like how she put it.

I’ve heard people say to him that, “If we do this, we don’t know if we will be successful,” and I’ve seen my husband time after time say, “There are very few things we can know beforehand. We will try and if we find we are wrong, we will have to change.”

I don’t know what is going to happen next in my life. I don’t know what the full results of my decisions will be. But I am going to keep moving. And if it turns out I am wrong, then I will make the necessary changes and keep moving in the new direction.

That is all any of us can expect. That is all any of us can do.

And some times it is nice to get a reminder that any mistakes I am making now, at least they are a whole different set than the ones I made before. I’m glad people are patient with me while I learn.

Also, there is a HUGE difference between worms and tiny snakes. There is more to it than just size. Eeeggks! Talk about heebie jeebies. Maybe sandals aren’t the best choice of footwear here.

How odd

Scientists have gone to the depths of the platypus genome and come back with their discoveries. The New York Times reported their findings on what a platypus looks like on the inside. I think it’s interesting.

But what I found most peculiar was that, while a platypus mom nurses her young (that are born in eggs), they don’t have nipples. They nurse them through the abdominal skin.

How does that work? Can a baby platypus just suck on any part of mom’s stomach and get fed?

Random Trippy Things

My trip to Utah was great. But there were a few random memorable moments that really make me laugh when I think about them.

My flight there was delayed a bit, so I had time to get dinner at Chili’s in the airport rather than fast food. But the only place they could seat me was at the bar. That’s just fine. Except the guy they sat next to me. He talked to me the whole time, telling me about where he lives (some place in Canada that he says is real boring), where he’s been (seems like he’s just flying from one airport to the next), and many other random things. I’ve never been hit on at a bar before. Not only did he not get my number though, but he did not even get my name. Just as I was finishing my meal (I must remember I do not like mustard the next time), Brett sent me a text telling me to tell the old creepy guys at the airport to stop ogling me. I laughed and looked up to see if he was watching me because the timing of it was just too perfect.42D

Sunday I stopped at my old ward in Orem to say hi to people there. I got there a bit before Sunday School finished and was just going to attend Relief Society, so I sat down in the foyer. One of the people who lived just down the hall from me saw me sitting there and said, “Wait, did you move?” Why yes I did move, four months ago. I’m glad my neighbors were so observant.

Monday night I went to dinner at the new Tucanos in Salt Lake with Brian and Michelle. Dinner was amazing. Wonderful company, wonderful food, wonderful weather (which was important since they had the HUGE windows open so it felt like we were sitting on a patio). As we walked back to the car we passed a clothing store. There was a three or four year-old boy playing in the display window. He was lifting the shirts of the mannequins and hitting them. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was one of the more bizarre things I’ve seen recently.

Monday night while playing a game with Brian and Michelle, one of us squished an ant that was crawling on the floor. Earlier during dinner I’d seen a trivia fact that said that the weight of the entire population of people on the earth is equal to the weight of all the ants on the earth. Boggles the mind. But with the squishing of that ant I commented that, “now humans are winning by that much.” I’m probably going to think that every time I squish an ant now.

On the flight back they gave me the whole can of cran-apple juice because I was the only person on the plane that wanted that.

And the walking tour of the airport in Phoenix was definitely memorable as well.42D

Mother Goose

Today is Mother Goose day. Did you know you can read The Real Mother Goose book online? I think that is real neat. So I’ve been trying to think of my favorite Mother Goose rhyme to put here. I encourage you all to do the same. And no excuses because you can get the book online. I’ve even provided the link. 🙂

I can’t think of my favorite, but this one is cute.

A CANDLE

Little Nanny Etticoat
In a white petticoat,
And a red nose;
The longer she stands
The shorter she grows.

Off the list

Categories: Relationships

I start out pretty optimistic about most people I meet. Or at least that’s how it probably sounds. Take the males of the human species as an example. I like to say I have a list of them that I would go on a date with. Pretty much all of them are on that list by default. They then work their way off the list in various ways. I’ve blogged previously about a few things a guy can do to get off my list.

There are two more specific guys that are off the list as of tonight.

Men who think that women can’t have opinions or know things don’t deserve to be on my list. Don’t go telling me that I don’t know what I’m talking about just because I pointed out the gaps in your logic. If you actually stop to think about it, and can get over your ego long enough to realize a woman might actually know something about that, you’d realize I’m right, and it’s not merely a matter of semantics.

I need to not let this bother me any more than it already does. Luckily, not all guys are that shallow and insecure.42D
