Another free t-shirt

Categories: Exercise

Back in June I paid $20 to register for an eleven mile trail race. That really isn’t that bad of a race registration. At the registration I got a free pair of running socks because I registered so early.

Yesterday I went and picked up my race packet. I got a free smoothie, a key ring with a compass on it and a flashing tail light I can attach to my waist band so cars can see that they are coming towards me if I run when it is dark. Free stuff!

This morning I woke up at 4:00 and stumbled out of bed. I put on my running clothes and drove out to the clear other side of town. I got on a bus and they took us to a state park. I stood in the dark chill for over an hour and then ran 11 miles up and down mountains and stairs and almost all of it on a sandy trail. Note, I am not a trail runner. I did not like that sand at all. The hard stuff wasn’t bad, but that sand was a killer. Considering how much I had trained, I did just as well as I expected to – I maintained a 12 minute mile over the whole course. The hills did my hips and knees in though. My left knee is going to be feeling this for a while. Stink bugs don’t come out till 7:30 I noticed though. And I got through about 60 chapters in Psalms.

As I crossed the finish line I got a bottle of water and one of a sport drink, as well as a tech shirt. Then over in the pre-race area they had free breakfast burritos (they were good, but the timing was bad) and more free smoothies.

And that’s what I did for this free t-shirt, pay $20 and run 11 miles. Only it was worth it. These tech shirts can cost $30-$40 in the store. So it was a very good deal. Now to make friends with my left knee and right hip again.

I’ll update on my other “free t-shirt” story some time next week I’d imagine.

Apples for homework

Categories: Education

Today is Johnny Appleseed day. Seven years ago today I was in Mexico doing my student teaching. I was in the town of Colonia Juaréz, a town with lots of apple and peach orchards. One of my students brought apples for me and the other student teachers almost weekly. And they were so good. I had a peach bigger than my fist there once.

I was teaching the third and fourth graders. On Johnny Appleseed day I told them part of their homework that night was to go home and eat an apple.

The town was small, so I went to church with my kids, went to Enrichment with their moms, and saw them on the streets after school. One of my third graders lived in the house behind where one of the student teachers was living while we were there. Her husband, Jay, saw him on the street that evening eating an apple. He was on his way to scouts. He complained to Jay that he had to eat the apple for homework.

And here I thought I’d assigned some good homework. It’s better than studying spelling!

The Phone Call

Categories: Random

I was cleaning off my phone this week, erasing old text messages and clearing out the call logs, who called me, who I called, who called when I didn’t answer. It was interesting and I started noticing patterns. I’m not a big phone person. But I do like numbers. So I counted how many times different people called me, and I made a chart.

Between the first of June and the middle of September, I made 58 calls and received 86. Those 58 calls were made to 10 different numbers. I received calls from 8 different numbers. The same color on each chart is the same person.42D

Enjoy the charts! And remember, e-mail is a great way to get me. But I do have a phone.

Welcome to Fall!

Yesterday was the official first day of Autumn. It seemed like the perfect time for the colors to change on my website and blog just as they are changing on the leaves of the trees in places of the country where they have Autumn (Tucson not being one of those). Luckily I took a lot of, in my opinion, amazing pictures of fall foliage over the last few years, so I can pull up those pictures to decorate my website with and just admire the constant beauty that is this changing world. Let me know what you think of the new look.

Not only are there now pretty colors here, but I finally figured out how to have it list over in the side what the most recent comments are. Now everyone will be able to see just how much I talk to myself and comment on my own posts.

My B.Log isn’t changing how it looks, but I have managed to finally catch up to how many books I’m supposed to be at this year, so there have been several new books added there as well. September 22nd was the end of the 38th week of the year, and I was able to put up my 38th review for the year that afternoon. I only have one more talk left in the May Ensign and then I’ll be able to spend an hour 4-5 days a week while I’m on the bus reading books (don’t know why I can read on a bus and not get sick at all but have difficulty sitting in the back seat sometimes and not getting sick). Since textbooks count, I’m making sure I do more than skim my homework this time around. I’m on track to finish the New Testament in mid-December. And since I’m listening to the Old Testament while I run, I have some motivation to get out and run more so I can finish that as well. I’m in the middle of 6 other books too. I should be able to get my 52 for the year. I’m excited about it.

Next Friday I’ll be participating in a visual neuro-cognitive brain study with MRIs on campus. They needed right handed people who are native English speakers and don’t have any metal in their body. That’s me! So I e-mailed and told them I was interested. Yesterday they called and asked me questions for 15 minutes to see if I’d qualify, and I do. Me and my boring drug-free healthy life. Next Friday I go in for the study and the MRI stuff.

The e-mail also said that participants would either be given money or the MRI pictures of their brain as compensation.

I’m torn. What do I take? Pictures of my brain would be real cool. Do I go for the pictures or the money?

Also, if any of my readers in Tucson are right handed native English speakers and would be interested, let me know and I’ll get you the contact information.

And how are you feeling today?

Legend says that it was on this day, 26 years ago, that the emoticon was created. (The emoticon is older than my sister. huh)

Of course my vote for the best use of an emoticon is much, much older than that. See John 2:9 for that one.
