Crackers!

Categories: Food

What’s your favorite cracker recipe?

I’m a munchy type of person and am looking for munchies to take to campus with me. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs says you have to meet lower needs (physiological – hunger) before you can meet higher needs (esteem – learning). So I need to be able to meet my needs.

What do you add to the mix for variety? What have you found doesn’t work well?

Links? Recipes? I’ll take anything. 🙂

It’s a bird! It’s a … bird!

Categories: Life

Today is “Draw a Picture of a Bird” day. Why? I don’t know. But my website of wacky holidays tells me it is, so I will obey.

Here’s my bird this year. A penguin, in case you couldn’t tell.

Draw your own bird and if you can (scanner, digital photo, digital drawing, paper drawing and postage stamp), send it to me and we’ll have a gallery of bird drawings. Even if it’s just a flock of seagulls. (Or put it on your own site and then put a link in the comments.)

Rabbit ears on the TV

Categories: Random

I remember once when I was little asking my mom one afternoon what was on TV. She told me, “Rabbit ears,” and I ran to the TV and asked what channel. Sounded like a fun show to me.

We don’t watch a lot of TV, just a handful of shows. But it’s definitely been a good TV week for me so far.

First off, Chuck and Sarah finally got together. YEA!! :woot:

She couldn’t love him when she thought he would shoot to kill. But shooting to save is a whole other issue.

Does my heart good.

Then on Biggest Loser, Melissa is gone. Again! I actually think she got it wrong. The other contestants are playing the game. It’s just not the same one she’s playing. They’re playing the “lose weight” game. She’s playing the “win money” game. My money is on everyone else to actually make the changes in their life to keep the weight off. I much prefer when people play the “lose weight” game.

Finally, not a show we watch but one I’ve seen commercials for. What’s the deal with celebrity game shows (currently, Celebrity Apprentice)? They are playing the game to donate money to the winner’s favorite charity. How about if all those celebrities just donate their own money instead of competing to donate somebody else’s money? Then all of their charities get money instead of just one.

Also, must stop eating jelly beans. Brett should eat more than a handful from the bag.

Sunshine in my Soul

Categories: Gospel, Happy Things, Life

There is sunshine in my soul today, more glorious and bright than glows in any earthly sky, for Jesus is my light.

What a wonderful Easter day. This morning we woke up and sat on our porch in the chill morning. And then the sun rose. And there was light, and warmth.

The Son is risen. And there is light in my soul.

Woe is me, the martyr

Fact: Everyone has trials. Everyone experiences bumps in their road of life.

If you are lucky, you learn something from your trial that makes you a better human being, better able to empathize with others, better able to handle future problems, stronger.

Question: Why is it then that we all seem to take pride in the trials we’ve gone through and how hard they were for us? Or is that just me?

Why do people think that the only way to learn a particular lesson is to go through their particular trial? That if you didn’t experience what they did then you can’t possibly know what they know? Which is partially true. I will never know exactly what someone else knows. But that would be true even if I experienced the exact same situation they did simply because we are two different people. What is a trial for one person might not be nearly so bad for somebody else.

That means that perhaps I can learn life lessons in another way if I can’t learn them in the same way as others. So when they say they learned all about how life is hard and you just have to keep going because they had babies that kept them up at night and they didn’t get a good night’s sleep for years, maybe they shouldn’t also say that unless you’ve done that you just can’t know about the hardness of life. Because then I wouldn’t give them a dirty look and think about all I’ve learned through my non-baby trials and then take pride in the fact that I’ll probably still get the lack-of-sleep-because-of-a-baby trial someday and that just makes me so much better than them because I’ve had trials they’ll never have but still get to have trials like theirs. Ha!

Wait. That’s just crazy talk. The prideful martyr thing is just crazy. Which is what I realized after I gave them a dirty look and thought about it for a minute.

Yes, I’ve had trials in my life that have taught me a lot about life, about how it isn’t always easy, about how you don’t always get what you want and sometimes you barely get what you need and how sometimes you can feel so utterly alone but if you don’t handle the situation than nobody will. But the way I learned those things is not the only way to gain the strength I have from getting through them.

I need to remember that more and give dirty looks less. Because this prideful martyr thing just won’t work out in the long run.

I’m on a horse

First the items and then the analysis and discussion.

30 second version:

15 second version:

This commercial first ran at the Super Bowl. There were a whole bunch of interesting commercials during that game that made me go “what in the world were they thinking?” Somehow, Brett missed this one during the game. But he recently saw it and we’ve had several discussions on it.

From my point of view, these commercials are clearly geared towards the woman in the house. They are appealing to her wants and desires. While the product is not for women, the advertisers are recognizing that it is the woman in the house who generally goes to the store and buys stuff like this. I noticed that there have been several commercials for men’s products lately that seem to be directed towards women for this reason. This commercial has set up a “sexy” man that’s fulfilling all the stereotypical fantasy desires of women – muscles, deep voice, romantic boat, tickets to a desired event, diamonds, and the white horse. That horse is not white by accident. And the idea is that while the middle-aged balding guy with a pot-belly sitting next to the woman will never have those looks or coming riding in on a white horse, maybe he can at least smell like he could.

Brett had a different reaction to it. He saw the commercial as being directed towards men. Instead of the guy being set up as a stereotypical fantasy for women, he’s set up as a stereotypical intimidating threat to the men. In essence the commercial is creating competition for the guy. And if he doesn’t want to lose his woman to the man on the horse, then he needs to use that product. He might not have a boat or ride a horse (backwards even), but he can at least smell like he could. And maybe that will give him the edge in his own romantic conquest.

Side note: Brett doesn’t use Old Spice currently. Not after I started laughing that they are the “official” scent of confidence. Where did they get that contract with confidence is what I want to know.

So is the commercial appealing to a woman’s fantasy or to a man’s sense of competition?

Either way, “I’m on a horse.”

How I know I’m a grown up

Categories: Life, Random

I know I have problems realizing that the reality around me is actual reality. I’m an adult? When did that happen?

But growing up there were a few milestones that I set out for me how I would know I’m a grown up.

I decided that when I had dressing other than Ranch on my salad I was an adult.

When I could eat a taco without having it all fall out on the plate then I was an adult.

When I could eat corn on the cob without leaving the cob looking all fuzzy from the corn skins still being stuck to it, then I was an adult.

I can’t remember exactly why I decided those were markers for being a grown up. But when I’d look around, those were all things grown ups did. So I figured when I could do those things then I’d be a grown up too.

What kinds of things did you see grown ups doing when you were little?
