I’ve been planning my Pi Day party for a couple of months now (it’s been on the calendar longer than that though because I knew when it would be). But Congress has gone and made it an official national holiday now. I kind of doubt that it will become a federal holiday with time off work and no mail delivery that day though. Scientific American also reported on the holiday a bit, “Happy 3/14, also known as pi day.”
FamousMathematicians will also be dropping a giant Pi at 1:59pm Eastern and Pacific times if you want to get in on that fun. (get it? 3/14 1:59)
Since it is also Albert Einstein’s 130th birthday, today is also “Talk Like a Physicist Day” (“Talk Like a Pirate Day” isn’t until September).
This year I feel extra prepared because I read a whole book called A History of Pi last year. It really has quite the history. A few years ago I also read a book about quantum physics that touched on some of the work by Einstein and his contemporaries, Entanglement: The Greatest Mystery in Physics. Physicists are people too (weird people, but still people), and that book talked a lot about their lives as well as their work.
So tonight we will be celebrating by eating pie and watching the movie IQ, because it features Einstein.
But, that’s not all. Tomorrow is the Ides of March! I do not have any friends named Brutus, or Bruce, so I’m not too worried. But we should celebrate the life of Julius Caesar as well. So there will be Little Caesar pizza and Caesar salads for dinner, before the pie.
Togas and pocket protectors are optional for the party. I’ll comment later with pictures and such and so forth reporting on the party.

I am an educator and graduate student. I quilt, belly dance, run, read, and try to grow things. I am a Mormon. I am a daughter, sister, aunt, grand-daughter, friend, and wife.

The success of the party was a high order of magnitude! Lots of PIe, lots of Caesar. No togas with pocket protectors though.
I’ve loaded the pictures on a picture page.
