Another homework assignment

Categories: Education, Science & Tech

The first assignment for my technology integration class was to start this blog. Now we have to write a telecollaborative lesson plan.

My partner and I wrote this lesson plan. It is due on the 14th, so there might be one or two changes between now and then.

Belly dancing and physical therapy

Categories: Exercise, Health, Random

I am now in physical therapy for the second time in six months. I really need to stop getting hurt. But the belly dancing I learned a few months ago is again helping me out. The last time it was better for my shoulders and back than the physical therapy was. This time it just makes for a funny story.

I sprained my ankle on New Year’s Eve trying to run on the side of my foot. It doesn’t work. You are supposed to only run on the bottom of your feet. You are also supposed to go to the doctor for any and all sprained ankles, but I didn’t know this before. It wasn’t getting better, so I finally went to the doctor last week. And he had me start physical therapy yesterday.

The therapist was having me do different exercises to try to get my ankle to loosen up so it will actually move again. One of the exercises was to put a big elastic band over the ball of my foot and hold the ends of the band in my hand. Then I had to draw the alphabet with my toes three times.

When I was taking belly dancing classes one of the exercises we did to help isolate different body parts was to write the alphabet with our shoulders, our chest, and our hips. So I told the therapist I’d already been doing that in my belly dancing class, only now he was asking me to do it with my foot.

It made him laugh. I don’t think anyone has ever told him that before.

This just goes to prove that everyone needs to take belly dancing.

Meeting my former self

Sometimes it is hard to see all the growth and progress we make over time. We change a little each day, and those little changes add up to big changes. But when we just compare one day to the next, it often doesn’t seem like anything has changed at all. It is only when we compare days that are months or even years apart will we see a difference. Sometimes I get frustrated with the apparent lack of progress in my life because of this.

But recently I met someone who reminds me of the me of three years ago. I haven’t pictured myself as being too different from who I was, but apparently I am. This person was shy, reserved, spent most of their time at home by them self rather than going out, even though they want to get out more. They were a little intimidated by the reality of the adult world and all that comes with being a part of it. That was me.

I’m not saying that now I am completely confident and nothing scares me any more, but I look at all I have done over the last three years, all the people I have met, all the places I have gone, and I am amazed.

It was eye opening to see the changes in me. I wonder what the next three years will bring.

An advantage of being a student

Categories: Books, Education

I think I have now started three books, but there is a fourth I have out with a book mark in because I think I want to start that one too. I can’t decide what book I am in the mood for, so I thought I would start a few and see which one I end up finishing first. Three of them I own, Redwall: The Legend Begins, Counseling With Your Counsels, and Rocket Boys. The fourth I checked out from the University of Utah library yesterday, The Familiar Letters of John and Abigail Adams. One of those should catch my interest.

I have always been a book lover with a reverence for libraries, especially big ones, and both Brigham Young University, and now the University of Utah, have big libraries that are open for me. They are a whole world waiting to be discovered in there. Oddly enough, BYU’s library was under construction while I was there, and the Univeristy of Utah library is under construction now. There was a moment of awe when I walked into the library yesterday though.

And I can access everything in that library now because I am a student. After I checked my book out yesterday, I realized an even greater advantage of being a graduate student – I can check out books for a very long time. That book isn’t due back till March 23rd, two whole months from now. I’ve never been able to check out books for that long before. This could get dangerous.

Cleaning the Kitchen

Categories: Life

Yesterday I decided to get all of my dishes done. While I was doing that I thought I should clean off my counters. And while I was doing that I thought I’d clean out my fridge. And while I was getting some sacks from under the sink to put garbage in, I organized the stuff under the sink. And while I was doing that I decided to organize the drawer I keep the lids for my storage containers in. Except while I was doing that I thought I might as well clean the cupboard where I keep the storage containers too. And if I was cleaning that cupboard I should clean out the cupboard above that one. And when that was was cleaned out, I had more room so I thought I’d clean the top of my fridge and the cupboards above the fridge, which led to cleaning the cupboard next to the fridge as well, and then to cleaning the book case where I keep my food storage. It was the whole “If you give a mouse a cookie” type of thing. But my kitchen is looking very clean and organized right now.

Winter Wonderland

It snowed a lot Wednesday night. I woke up yesterday morning and there was about six inches of snow outside. The trees were covered, the ground was soft. It was beautiful. Snow makes everything quieter, more peaceful. I wish I would’ve had time to get my camera and take pictures of the drifts on the snow and the smooth whiteness. Unfortunately I had to drive to work. On days like that I’d rather stay home and watch the snow outside while I’m wrapped up in a blanket, holding a mug of hot chocolate, and reading a book.

The kids at school were busy yesterday with all of the snow. The playground is still white, but there are 18 HUGE snow balls, larger than the average third grader. I was very impressed with them. It showed a lot of teamwork that the students had been able to make all of those. Today they started knocking them down. I watched one class spend an entire recess taking turns kicking at one of the balls until it broke in half. Then a few of them took the pieces and started rolling those. It was fascinating.

The trouble with vacations

Categories: Life, Work

I love vacations, but they cause so many problems. The first day back after a nice long vacation, long being anything over three days, is always so hard. The last thing I want to do in the morning is get up for work. Of course it doesn’t help any that I am most assuredly not a morning person. My body clock is set for several time zones away. And it doesn’t matter if it is a morning after a vacation or not, getting up is hard.

But the last night of a break is always so depressing. It never seems like I got everything done that I had planned, including getting all of the rest I wanted to get.

So maybe the solution would be to never have any vacations. We could all just work for the rest of our lives. And we’d all very quickly go insane as well. So that can’t be the solution then. Without the vacations I get, I would most assuredly go crazy. I love my job. I have so much fun teaching. I get paid to play. But if I couldn’t look forward to summer vacation every year… Well, let’s just not think about that, okay?
