People change

Categories: Life

Time passes and people change. It’s a fact of life. Some times we grow taller. Some times we grow wider. Some times we grow stronger. Some times we grow weaker. Some times the changes are physical, some times mental, some times emotional, some times spiritual. But we are always changing.

There are times when I look at my life, and just looking from one day to the next I can’t see any difference at all, either for good or bad. It is like watching the sunset. From one minute to the next it is real hard to see how dark it is becoming. But when you compare larger amounts of time, from one hour to the next, or compare the darkness of an ending sunset to the brightness inside, you can really see a difference. We need that contrast and that bigger perspective often to see the changes within us.

I see change in the people all around me too. Often I think that is easier. In my ward we have a lot of little children. It is very easy to see how time passes as you watch them learn to sit up or crawl or walk. It often feels like they were just born yesterday, and there they are running all over the place. It’s nice to have that reminder that, yes, time is still moving forward.

And then I see some of the people I know and the changes that are happening in their lives, more internal changes than anything else, and I wonder if they can see what is happening. I wonder if they realize how different they are now from how they used to be. I wonder if they are concsiously moving their life in that direction or if it is silently slipping away from them. How much change do we have to go through before we notice what is happening?

School Vouchers

Categories: Education

The Utah legislature is again considering school vouchers. Apparently the fact that it hasn’t passed the last five years makes them think it will this time for some reason.

What vouchers say to me is this:
We know Utah schools suck. We have this money we get from every single parent in the state. Rather than giving this money to public schools so it can benefit the children of each of those parents, lets give it to a select few parents so they can give their kids a good education and to hell with the rest of them.

Throwing money at a problem won’t make it better, but taking money away from this problem isn’t going to make it better either.

The Car, yet again

The squealing, smoke, and broken belt of yesterday were caused by the alternator that was put in on Friday. It was a bad alternator. But it was still under warranty – being only 4 days old. So now I have a good alternator.

The End (it better be)

Car Update

Categories: Life

Yesterday my car started making this awful awful noise. So I took it back to the mechanic. He listened to it and said he was 90% sure it was the water pump. The part would be $100, and then four hours of labor, so about $500. I couldn’t believe it. I only paid $1000 for the car! And here I was spending that much more in one weekend to fix it.
He called me tonight to tell me to come get it, and he said he had good news. It wasn’t the water pump. It was the plastic cover over the pump that had warped. They fixed it for half the original estimate.

I drove it away from the mechanic, and the charge battery light was on, which I know is stupid because the alternator was fixed Friday and the battery is fine. About five blocks from the mechanic the engine started to squeal. Two blocks later the engine started to smoke. So I pulled over and called the mechanic. He came and found me, looked at it, and found a broken belt. He also said it didn’t look like the alternator or the pump was doing what they were supposed to, but the alternator is under warranty. So he’s going to fix it tomorrow and it should be ready by noon.

Everyone cross your fingers this is the last of my car troubles. I need this car to last at least until this summer. I’m glad I have a mechanic I can trust. I just wish I didn’t need to see him so often.

Ouch

Yesterday hurt. I spent the morning at the auto mechanic. My car had to be jumped start so I could get home on Wednesday, and since I was going to be needing an oil change real soon, I decided to just go get the whole thing looked at. I thought it might just be something simple with the battery. But the battery was fine. That meant it must be the alternator. And that isn’t simple, or cheap. Luckily, I have a good mechanic and instead of costing $600, it only cost me $400. That still hits into my tax refund a bit hard. But the alternator now has a life time warranty. So I won’t have to do that again.

I spent the afternoon in physical therapy for my ankle. It has now been seven weeks since I sprained it, and I still could barely move my ankle, and the movement I had hurt. So the therapist decided to try something new to break up the scar tissue that is probably keeping my foot from healing. The way I think of it, they resprained my ankle so that now it will heal correctly. That HURT!! From about mid-calf down through my foot was beat up. My ankle still hurts, especially if anything touches it. The rest of it just feels a bit strange. But – I can move my foot again. They are going to do it again on Monday. I’m not looking forward to that, but if it gets me back to normal, I guess we’ll do it. Watching the Olympics always makes me want to get out and exercise more, and I haven’t been able to do that because of my ankle.

The Modern Age

I am a member of two on-line communities currently. One is basically (very loosely) about Utah theater. The other is about quilting. I participate in both of these communities via message boards. The theater one, Players Anonymous, is completely addicting. Part of that is probably that I’ve met a lot of the people on it in person. We have several parties during the year together, there is a book club, a movie club, and monthly lunches. The quilting one isn’t quite so addicting because I’ve never met any of them. Although quilting is addicting, so I keep going back.

Recently, the theater website was down for maintanence. It was actually down because they had to change servers since they told us we were taking up too much space on the old server. So for four days nobody access any of the website, including the message boards and the chatroom. It also happened to be right when I needed to get in contact with several people I know from there. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to contact them outside of the web site. So I had to call the few I did have numbers for and see if they have phone numbers for other people. Then I had to call them and get them to figure out who I was since I’ve never called them before and they would never really expect me to call.

You would think it would be easy to get a hold of people with so many different ways available for us today. I guess we just all became so dependent on one way, that when that way wasn’t available, we were all completely lost. I find it strangely sad and funny at the same time.
