Freedom!!

I don’t have to go to work till August 16th! Life is so good.

It’s going to be fun to try to remember where I packed everything and where I had it to begin with.

Today’s question

Categories: Questions

Actually, this is a question I’ve been thinking about for a couple of days. Why do we use the verb “to take” when we are talking about cleaning ourselves with a bath or a shower? It’s even the same verb in Spanish and Portuguese. Where are we taking these showers to? They don’t go anywhere. This is just my oddity for the day.

It’s official

Categories: Life

It’s official. I don’t ever want to be murdered and left in the woods or thrown into the water. I don’t want maggots or star fish or crows or rats or anything else eating me like on the PBS Nature show I’m watching.

Apparently you can learn a lot about when and how a person died by studying the maggots. How, and why, would someone want to study that and get into that field? They use dead pigs mostly to study it because they decompose a lot like we do. But one university has people lined up to donate their bodies, when they die, to the “body farm” where they study the decomposition of people bodies. Ick. No. Not for me.

Why am I still watching this?

Somebody stole my chives. Now why would they want to do a thing like that?

The wind on my face

Categories: Exercise, Musings

It has gotten very warm here lately. Perfect weather for driving down the freeway with the windows down, feeling the wind blowing, feeling that freedom. I love it. It’s one of the small pleasures in life.

I think this is why I have a hard time working out at a gym, there’s no wind. Running on a treadmill is work. Running on the road is freedom. It’s smelling the lilac bushes as you run past. It’s dogs barking at you from their yards and running along the fence with you. It’s jumping over puddles. It’s waving at other runners. It’s the openness to let your mind go where it will. It’s feeling the sun on you, or the rain, or the wind. It’s letting go of everything else you had going on that day. It’s just being. Being part of something bigger than you, part of the world, part of the sky, part of the universe.

That’s what running is for me. It’s knowing I have to keep pushing myself because I’m not home yet. I don’t think I’m necessarily running away from something when I run. Instead I’m running to something. I’m running to peace. I’m running to strength, physical strength, cardio strength, and the inner strength that only comes when you are at peace with yourself and the world. I’m running to letting go. I’m running “home.”

That’s why I run, for the freedom of the wind on my face.

Why do kids eat headphone cords?

If your kid wears glasses, even if it’s just to read, why would they ever arrive at school without them?

Addiction

Categories: Quilting/Sewing/Knitting/Crafting

I’m addicted to sewing. And while quilts will always be my favorite, I’m discovering how fun it can be to sew clothes for myself. It’s a good thing I work at a fabric store now or I’d be in a lot of trouble. Although maybe I wouldn’t be in so much trouble if I didn’t work there. I’m not sure.

I sewed myself a new dress Saturday night. It looks great (photo 1 & photo 2), and when I figured out how much the material cost me, the whole dress was under $6. You can’t get that kind of a deal anywhere. Of course it took time to make it, especially since I tried to sew the neck facing on the outside of the dress first and then had to unpick it. But it’s mine, and it fits, and I love it.

I have another skirt that is half done, and yet another skirt and pair of pants that I have the material for and just haven’t started on yet too.

While I was at it, I thought, it’s been a long time since I made myself a new blanket. Sure I have a whole bunch of other blankets I need to make for other people that I really should finish, or at least start. But this fabric was speaking to me. I looked at it for three weeks before buying it, so that’s got to count for something, right? Last night I cut out all the pieces for the quilt. I cut out matching pjs while I was at it too.

Tonight I think I’ll cut out at least one more blanket I need to get done. There are three that need to be cut out though. Well, maybe four. Okay, five quilts I need to finish some time this year for other people that I already have everything for and haven’t even started. I have two quilt tops completely finished, one is even basted and ready for quilting. I need to get those finished. I have another quilt just in blocks that I’ll need to figure out what to do with eventually, but they are Christmas blocks. I have another Christmas quilt that is cut out and the blocks are partially sewn. I should probably finish that one before Christmas too. I have a wall hanging I need to add borders to as well. And then I need to make another baby blanket some time real soon too, but I don’t have anything for that one yet.

That makes more than ten quilt projects I’m in the middle of, or should be in the middle of. Does mental planning count as having started a quilt?

Yes, I think I have a serious quilting/sewing addiction. But at least I won’t be naked or cold as a result. 🙂
