As I was traveling this weekend, I was struck by several ponderables.

Why on escalators and moving sidewalks can they not get the timing right so your feet and the handrail go at the same time? The handrail always goes just a tad bit slower.

At the baggage claim: Why must people stand right up against it to wait for their luggage? And, when they see it come out of the hole, why do they have to run around the thing to get their bag as soon as possible? Do they not realize that it goes in a circle and will come to them?

And I guess this isn’t really a question, more an amazement at how many people don’t really watch the news. The new carry-on restrictions started on Thursday. That’s been a top news story for days, along with why. And yet there was a youngish twenty or so girl in the airport aboslutely amazed that they made her check her bag with her make-up in it. I guess there are people who really are clueless about the world around them.

My vacuum sucks

My vacuum sucks, big time. And it’s great. It’s a little louder than I’m used to. It has swivel caster wheels, so it’s a lot more maneuverable than I’m used to as well. But it really sucks. And because it has a clear canister and not a bag, I can see just how bad my other vacuum wasn’t sucking, or maybe my floor just gets real dusty real fast. Either way, vacuuming is going to be a lot more fun now.

What makes it work

Last summer a friend of mine told me a very important piece of information. Just about everything we use runs on smoke. If you let the smoke out, the thing doesn’t work so well. He discovered this amazing fact one evening at a concert in the park when the smoke escaped from the speakers and they had to get new speakers.

Last week the smoke escaped from my vacuum. It doesn’t work any more. It’s hasn’t really sucked wonderfully well for a while anyway, and now that the smoke got out of it I’m not even going to try. So today I bought a vacuum that really sucks (at least I’m hoping it does. I haven’t used it yet). This one still has all its smoke inside too. I checked.

I get paid for this?

I think when you have a job that lets you just lie in bed till 11 in the morning, not because you are tired and not because you are sick and not because you were up too late, but because you don’t have anything urgent to do and your bed is comfortable, and I get paid to do that for 2.5 months out of the year. And I can read or text message friends and not feel guilty that I should be doing something. I think that’s a pretty good job.

Twenty-four hours later and 20 of my 33 computers are still upgrading themsleves. So much for pulling them out of the box and having them ready to go.

And my classroom is hotter than hot because the computers have had to run non-stop. They turned on the air conditioner this afternoon and I opened both of my doors and pulled out my fan to try to get the air moving through the room.

There is the possibility that they will be finished by late tonight though. Maybe.

Mac lies

The most annoying commercials in the world for me are Mac computer commercials. I have never seen a bigger bunch of 30 second lies.

Today the lie I would like to focus on is their claim that all you have to do is plug in their computers and you are set. This is a lie.

My lab at work just got 35 new eMacs. Wonderful! And I spent two hours just going through the registration process on all of them. And now there is about 10 hours of updates they have to sit through. They just came out of the box! How many updates can there be?!?

I’ve got the updates going, I’ll let them run all night, and I’ll have to come back tomorrow to see how they are doing.
