That was not the race I had planned to run. In some ways it turned out better than I thought it would, in other ways worse.

I actually didn’t get to the race on time. I got there ten minutes late. But they have computer chip things that you tie to your shoe for the official time, so all I had to do was make sure I crossed the starting line when I started so it would register when I started. Within three blocks I had already caught up to people and started passing them. By the first mile I was well into the pack. I don’t know that anybody ever really passed me, which is not how races usually go for me.

It was ten years ago today that I ran my first marathon. It had only been a year and a half since I’d dislocated my knee and the doctor had told me there was really nothing they could do to fix it. I got a bit emotional as I started this race because the last few weeks have been the first time in 11 years I have run without a knee brace, and this was the first race I’d done since January of 1996 without one. I ran the marathon to prove that a stupid knee wasn’t going to keep me down.

I had my cell phone with me in case I needed help getting back to the start for my car or something, so about half way through the race I called Brian because I thought it would be hilarious to call someone while I was in the middle of a race.

I crossed the finish line at the time I thought I would, which meant I ran the race about ten minutes faster than I thought I would, which was weird, but good. I’m not complaining.

I’ve seen races where the person finishes and then collapses at the end or throws up, but I’ve never, other than the marathon where I literally couldn’t move my legs that night, had that happen to me – until today. I crossed the finish line strong, took a few steps to slow myself down, but the contents in my stomach didn’t slow down and it was all I could do not to throw up. I didn’t think the other finishers would want to have to step around a pile of throw-up. As I walked through the finishers area I just needed air, and to lie down. There were a few moments where I thought I might pass out. So that part wasn’t so good. I still need to just lie down or something, but not eat, nothing sounds like it would feel good going down.

No blisters on my feet or toes. So that was good.

And I had one of those free sports massages they offer at the end of races from a guy named Sam. That felt real nice. I love a good leg and glute massage.

I think maybe when I get back from my vacation next week I’ll make an appointment to see a doctor and see if it isn’t too late for physical therapy. My knee did great today, but even Sam could tell there was a difference between my two knees and said there was a lot of scar tissue built up in one spot of my knee cap.

Happy Birthday to Me!

It was 29 years ago right now that I was born. My dad claims that it was the earliest I have ever been up in my life. Except today I woke up at 3am because I needed to be somewhere before 8 in the morning even. I’m looking forward to a good day today.

The end of Harry Potter

Categories: Books, Family, Happy Things, Life

The first Harry Potter book was published in the United States in 1998. It was a real big hit and everyone was reading them. Because everyone else was doing it, I decided I would never read the books. My family felt about the same way.

Three years later I was in Brasil and saw the second Harry Potter book at the grocery store. I thought that would make a fun souvenir since I loved children’s books and it was in Portuguese. By that time I was also getting letters from my family about how much they loved the books.

I returned to the United States in 2001 and that Summer set about to read the first four books because my parents and sister kept going on about how good they were. Besides, I now owned one of them, and so I should probably read them. I checked out the first one from the library and set to it. It was a great book. I then read the second one in Portuguese. It was a bit of a challenge, I didn’t know the phrase “vomiting slugs” in Portuguese so I had to look that one up, along with several other words. And somehow, when they were doing the translation, they left out one key sentence. So when Harry turns to Ron and asks him if he remembers where the spider said the dead girl was found, I had no idea what he was talking about because the spider hadn’t said anything about where the dead girl was found.

I was hooked.

My sister went to England for a semester and I told her I wanted the Harry Potter books in the original English, not the American I had at home. She gave me a boxed set of the first four with the children’s covers. Those were fun to read. I’m going to get the rest when they are all out in paper back and combine my order with some other people so the cost of shipping will be split amongst us. I’ve also found the first book in Portuguese and am always on the look out for the others. And I think it would be fun to read Harry Potter in Latin and Ancient Greek as well (which it has also been translated into).

I ordered the fifth one on-line to be delivered the day it was released. But it wasn’t. It was so hard to wait for it to finally be delivered on Wednesday. By then my parents and sister had already read it.

For the sixth book I decided a midnight party sounded more fun, but I didn’t bother pre-ordering. Instead I took my chances and ended up winning a book at the party I was at. We started reading it on the drive home, and other than a brief stop to sleep and another one to go buy milk, I read the book straight through (book 6).

This time, I actually pre-ordered. Again we started reading on the drive home. I took a four hour nap in the middle of the book, and finished it this evening. I loved it. It was a wonderful book that had me sobbing with red puffy eyes at times, sitting forward trying to catch every word at times, and wanting to stand up and cheer out loud as well. I’m working on getting the chapter by chapter notes/times up right now like I did with the last book. It will be on the other part of my site. (edit: It’s up => HP7)

Part of me was sad to know that this would be the last Harry Potter book. J. K. Rowling equated it to a bereavement as she finished writing it. But that didn’t stop me from reading it straight through. I had to know how it ended. It really is almost like an addiction. I had to have my Potter.

As someone who now has made some Harry Potter inspired witch’s outfits (2, actually) and who people look to as someone who knows a lot about the world of Harry Potter, well, you’d never guess I’m someone who said they’d never read them.

A children’s book?

The other day I noticed this information about the final Harry Potter book:

Product Details
ISBN: 0545010225
ISBN-13: 9780545010221
Format: Hardcover, 784pp
Publisher: Scholastic, Inc.
Sales Rank: 1
Age Range: 9 to 12
Series: Harry Potter Series, #7

I would NOT give this book to a 9 year old, or even a 12 year old. And I haven’t even read it yet. These stopped being juvenile books a few books ago and are now for adolescents. The rule of thumb with books for young people is that they are recommended for those 3-4 years younger than the main character. That means the 7th book, in which Harry is 17, would be recommended no younger than 13! The first book, when Harry was 11, was just fine for the 9-12 crowd. I highly doubt this book will be entirely appropriate for a 9 year-old.

Now, if I’m reading a book to my kids, so that we are reading it together and we can discuss anything that might be in the book, I’d stretch that age range a bit further down.

Help!! County Fair Time

Categories: Questions

I need to turn in my entries for the County Fair on Tuesday, July 17th. As usual, I’m having a hard time picking which ones I want to print and enter. I’ve pulled out my favorites from the last year and put them all on one page of my website. Let me know what you think of them. I need to know by Monday which ones I’m going to print.

Here’s a link to the photos: 2007 Fair Photos

Thanks.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I got home from the movie not quite an hour ago. I still don’t think my mind has processed all of it. The film was great. It was exciting to be there to see it at midnight with a full theater (and another one right down the hall, and two more starting at 12:15 further down the hall). It was a fun atmosphere to watch it in. I really liked the way my hat and shirt turned out as well. And I even found the perfect color of nail polish to match. It’s the little things. How often do I get a chance to paint my nails calypso?

The movie was amazing. Wow! They had to skip a lot of the little parts of the book and that makes it hard to follow if you haven’t read the books, but they did a great job of working it all together. The way they treated Sirius leaving in the Department of Mysteries was real powerful, as was Harry’s flashes as he’s struggling with Voldemort.

As I drove home I remembered when the book came out and how I felt reading the end of the book. I had to just sit and process and decompress after finishing the book. There were other things going on in my life right then that I hadn’t thought about till tonight as well. Strange time. I feel very similar now that I’ve watched the movie. I’m going to need some time to decompress. If I would’ve had more gas in my car I might’ve gone for a longer drive than simply from the theater home tonight.

I’m glad I had the pygmy puff Mom made that I could hold onto during a lot of the movie. I squeezed that thing good several times.

Harry Potter!!

Two more days till the movie comes out. I just bought my ticket. I’m so excited. And I’ve got my hat and shirt ready to go for it. I’m working my way through the books again, but I won’t have the fifth one done in time for the movie. I am watching the other four movies though. I have favorite lines in all of them that just crack me up every time.

Quirrell running into the Great Hall on Halloween and saying “Troll! In the Dungeon! Thought you ought to know,” before fainting in the first movie makes me smile.

In the second movie I love it when Mr. Weasley asks Harry what the function of a rubber ducky is.

In the third movie Ron has the best lines. I like it when he wakes up from a dream and says the spiders want him to tap dance but he doesn’t want to. Harry tells him to tell the spiders that and Ron agrees that’s what he’ll do. Later, after the whole thing in the Shrieking Shack, Ron is talking with Hermoine about the bite on his leg from Sirius. Ron tells Hermoine that it’s too late and they’re going to have to chop it off.

And in the fourth movie at the first task when Barty Crouch says “Oooooo” after one of them pulls their dragon out of the bag – there’s just something about the way he does that. I can’t help but laugh at him. I also like it at the beginning of the Hogwarts feast when Filch trots up to the front, whispers something to Dumbledore, and then trots out and there is never any mention what they talked about.

I’m looking forward to seeing what one liners are going to stand out to me in this next movie.
