Sacred honor

Categories: Gospel

Sacred adj: consecrated, made holy; reverently dedicated; regarded with reverence; secured against violation.

Honor n: honesty, fairness, or integrity in one’s beliefs and actions; high respect; a source of credit or distinction; purity; good name; reputation; a code of integrity, dignity, and pride.

There are several things in my life that I value. Without a doubt one of those is my honor. I hold it sacred. I try to be honest in all I do. I try to act with integrity at all times. In this day of electronic interactions, I do take a bit of pride in hearing from people that I am the same either through the computer or in person. I am who I am. I can be nothing else. Being trusted is a grand compliment.

A person’s honor should be sacred. To treat it any less is to not have any honor to begin with.

Fortunes

Categories: Happy Things

Who are those that are truly rich? Recently I was watching reruns of Mad About You and it was the episode titled “Money Changes Everything.” Ira’s ex returns. The back story is that after leaving Ira she married a count somewhere and became a contessa. And then the count died. She returns and has her contessa tiara with her. It’s bejeweled and pretty and sparkly. Jamie tries it on and goes about the rest of what she has to do that morning with it on.

Tiaras do seem to have magical powers. Wearing one makes any day better. I have a flowered crown with streamers that I call my “pretty pretty princess hat” and I love to wear it randomly. We bought it at the wild flower farms in Texas back in 2004.

My dad thinks it’s silly. I think he’s just jealous. It’s a great princess hat.

Several years ago as we were all in meetings at the beginning of the school year, a few teachers and I decided that meetings would be a lot better if they let us wear tiaras to them. That turned into having a school wide theme for Halloween that year. Everyone was welcome to declare themselves the winner of whatever beauty pageant they wanted and wear a tiara. We had a cave woman, a witch, a queen, a princess, all kinds of tiara wearers. It was great. The tiaras made a great difference.

At the end of the Mad About You episode Jamie has had to give back the bejeweled tiara. She and Paul are sitting on the couch watching TV. She has on a paper crown now and Paul apologizes that it isn’t bejeweled. Jamie replies that the contessa’s hadn’t said “Happy New Year” on it. And that is where the fortune lies.

The bejeweled tiara wasn’t necessary. Those who have family, friends, love, those are the ones with the true fortune. And if you have that, then any tiara can seem like a bejeweled crown.

Pursuit of Happiness

Happiness: Everyone’s entitled to pursue it, but no one is guaranteed to find it. Finding it is easier depending on what you are willing to let make you happy and how you define it though.

I have a few quotes I have collected about happiness that I think define how to pursue and find happiness.

– Happiness is like a butterfly. The more you chase it, the more it will elude you. But if you turn your attention to other things, it comes and sits softly on your shoulder. – Nathaniel Hawthorne
– The grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. – Joseph Addison
– The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved, loved for ourselves, or rather loved in spite of ourselves. – Victor Hugo

I’m not always happy. I do have my moments of despair. We all have our ups and downs. But on the whole, I think I’m a happy person. I have things to do, to turn my attention to. I have people to love. And I have hope. If happiness is one of Hawthorne’s butterflies, I think hope is the other.

There are people who think that when the next big thing happens in their life they’ll find happiness. When I leave home. When I graduate college. When I get a job I like. When I get married. When we have kids. When the kids are grown. When I live somewhere else. But those are the people who will be forever chasing the elusive butterfly rather than sitting still and being happy with the direction they are going.

As I was thinking about this topic, particularly about those people who think they can’t be happy unless they are married, two different parts from the movie While You Were Sleeping came to mind. I’ve always liked the first quote because having sole possession of the remote control is real nice some times.

Lucy: It’s just that, you know, when I was a kid I always imagined what I would be like, or where I would be, or what I would have when I got older. And, you know, it was the normal stuff. You know I’d have a house and family and things like that. Not that I’m complaining or anything because I have a cat. I have an apartment. Sole possession of the remote control. Very important. It’s just I’ve never met anybody that I could laugh with, you know. Do you believe in love at first sight. I bet you don’t. You are probably too sensible for that. Or have you ever, like, seen somebody, and you knew that if only that person really knew you, they would, well they would of course dump the perfect model that they were with and realize that you were the one they wanted to just grow old with have you ever fallen in love with someone you haven’t even talked to have you ever been so alone you spend the night confusing a man in a comma.

Lucy: Yes, Jerry, I’m insane. Every day I go and I sit in a booth like a veal. I work every holiday. I go home to a cat. And now a rich and handsome man has asked me to marry him and I have said yes. Okay. Okay. That makes me a raving total lunatic.
Jerry: The wedding is tomorrow Lucy.
Lucy: I know it’s tomorrow Jerry. But you know what I even wish it were yesterday. Because you know what? That would that mean that today that I would be on my honeymoon, that I would finally have a stamp in my passport, and that it would say Italy on it!
Jerry: What happened with the other guy.
Lucy: He didn’t want me.

Lucy thought she needed to me married to be happy. So in a way she really was a raving total lunatic. Being married does not automatically equal happiness, especially if you are marrying one person when you want someone else. There is definitely more to happiness than being married. It seems there are a lot of people who feel that way though.

I certainly don’t feel rejected simply because I’m not married. I have hope in my life. I have happiness. The butterfly sits gently on my shoulder. I could easily spook him and he’d leave. But instead I try to just gently live my life, take life as it comes, and hope. Hope and happiness quite often go together. I love butterflies. And hope and happiness are welcome to sit on my shoulder whenever they want.

Liberty

There are those who might say that because I follow the rules and commandments of my religion, that my life is limited. But it is by following those rules and commandments that I actually have true liberty. I’m free from hangovers. I’m free from drug addictions. Every time I see one of those STD commercials I’m reminded that I’m free from ever needing those.

I’m also free to learn all that I can. I’m free to study and grow and travel. I’m free to try new things. I’m free to question and find answers. I’m free to be the best person that I can be without having to worry about being held back by bad consequences of what I do.

Just as a kite needs a tail and a string if it is going to really fly, rules and commandments are my tail and string that let me fly to some amazing heights!

Life

How is life defined? Is life something with a nervous system like animals and insects? What about plants? Is life determined by things that need oxygen and water and have carbon in them? So then what about anaerobic bacteria that dies in the presence of oxygen? In our search for life elsewhere, how much have we limited ourselves by looking only for traces of carbon or water? Would viruses be considered alive since they need other cells to reproduce? Are all living things conscious of the fact that they are alive?

When I was young and playing with dolls, I used to be afraid that I was just a doll someone was playing with. However life is defined though, I am pretty sure I am alive.

Yes. I’m alive. I am a life. And this life is pretty good. 🙂

Rights

Categories: Random

Rights are an interesting concept. Some people seem to feel that they have the right to do whatever they want. That is really not the case. If everyone does whatever they want, then it is anarchy. You only have rights in as much as someone else gives them to you. Your rights should not impede the rights of others. And you do not have the right to avoid the consequences of your actions (as determined by a higher authority) either. People have the right to an opinion, but should remember that is what they are. People (unfortunately) have the right to be stupid, but should not then be surprised when they are treated as if they are.

The Marathon

Categories: Exercise, Family, Health

We are taking a break from the month’s theme today to bring a brief story of the Marathon.

The Good

  • I finished.
  • I finished faster than I did 11 years ago (5:18:46.6 officially this time) and at a pretty good pace (I ran the last .2 at the pace I thought I’d be running the whole thing at).
  • I finished with energy. I at least felt like I had energy to run more, but my legs hurt too much to actually run (see “Ugly” below).
  • I got lots of birthday wishes (I got one of my birthday quilt squares done, the one that says “For my 30th Birthday” on it and pinned it to my back). A lot of people wished me a happy birthday as they passed me. At the aid station around mile 19 all the volunteers even sang to me – “Happy biiirthday #149——, Happy birthday to youuuu!”
  • My ankle didn’t bother me. Pretty good for injuring it so bad I couldn’t walk just over a month ago.
  • The blue jump suits to keep warm at the start. If they’d been orange we would’ve looked like convicts, but they kept us warm.
  • Around mile 22 there was a guy cheering on the side of the road. He called out that they told him there was just four more miles for us to go and that they said that meant we were almost done. I gave him a smile and he laughed back.
  • A group of guys passed me singing the Primary song, “For some must push & some must pull…”
  • As we started down the mountains, a woman near me looked out at the lights in the valley and said they were so far away. I commented back that at least we aren’t doing it with a handcart, she added whiney kids, I added a big dress and bad shoes, and we also weren’t freezing and eating bad food.

This picture was taken on the 23rd, my birthday. This is up at the starting line. We are running down to the valley way back there in the distance.
  • There was a woman as I rounded a corner on mile 22 holding a sign that said “Your Awesome Go” and it made me smile. I’m sure she meant to write “You’re Awesome Go.”42D
  • I was surprised to see Becky Bragg at the end. She said her husband was running too and hadn’t finished yet. (I beat the bishop!) It was fun to see them.
  • Text message from Amanda: You look horrible! But keep running! Yay you!
  • Text message from Josh: Good luck today
  • Things that didn’t hurt at the end – my head, my stomach, my lower back.
  • Ice cold wash cloth at the end. That was pure genius.

The Bad

  • I would’ve had to basically win my division to qualify for Boston.
  • Yes, Brett, altitude made a difference.42D
  • Anything with an incline became hard around mile 11. At mile 15 I gave up running anything with an incline. And going down stairs today has been real hard (and apparently quite funny) if I wanted to do it on my feet.

The Ugly

  • My calves started to kill me…
  • and then my hips…
  • and then my knees.
  • My arms hurt.
  • My upper back was killing me.
  • I got light headed for several miles.
  • My nose tingled.
  • My hands tingled.
  • My chest hurt.
  • I got a blister on my little toe that pretty much is the size of my little toe.
  • I kicked my left ankle so much with my inability to run straight that I tore the skin off it.

I hurt. I can barely go up and down the stairs. And I’m sure my sanity is still being questioned, but I’m probably going to do all this again. Having it with my birthday makes it special. I’m really glad my dad did this with me.

My Dad and I:
