A friend is free

Categories: Gospel, Life

Sunday afternoon a friend of mine stopped having to fight cancer. Her husband’s blog entry the next day was titled “Julie Stout is Free.” And her obituary gives a touching summary of just some of the lives she touched.

Some of my strongest memories of Julie are when I was serving as the Relief Society president in our ward. It was common knowledge that I didn’t know much about cooking beyond the basics. And the bishop liked to tease me about that from time to time. I can’t remember what we were talking about in this particular meeting, but the bishop turned to me and asked me what I would do if someone in the ward needed help cooking beans. Without thinking I told him I’d send them to Julie. She knew all of that stuff and I knew she would willingly serve and help wherever she could because she always had in the past.

She loved her family. She loved the gospel. And she loved her Savior.

She was a friend and an example to me.

I have no doubt that she is now free from the trials of this earth and is enjoying the rest of the righteous.

One small step

If ever there was a moment in history that I wish I could’ve been there for, forty years ago today would be one of them. Space has always fascinated and inspired me. I still feel a stir in my heart when I hear the words and see the pictures of the moment when we stood in another place in the universe.

You are go for landing.

Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.

That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

Several years earlier, President Kennedy, speaking at Rice University, had inspired a nation with these words:

We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not becasue they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.
– John F. Kennedy, September 12, 1962

I am left to wonder if we still have that same spirit. Do we still choose things because they are hard, because they will test and challenge us? Or have we chosen the easy way in too many things?

So go outside. Look at the moon. Remember that men have stood there. And decide to be inspired. Decide to do something because it will challenge you.

You can relive the mission with photos and the audio transmission at We Choose the Moon. Astronomy Picture of the Day is one place to see some great images too – From the Moon to the Earth & Onto a New World. And I can also recommend the autobiography of flight director Gene Kranz, Failure is Not an Option, be inspired by one of the countless men who took us to our wildest dreams.

Harry Potter!

Why yes, I am a grown 30 year-old woman (31 next week) wearing a witch’s hat and taking a stuffed green cat to a midnight movie. And what a movie it was!

We are speaking of course, of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

I attended with my friend Alisa and some of her friends. It was fun looking around the theater before the movie started and seeing all of the other people dressed up. There were a few dressed as Draco. There was a Bellatrix Lestrange and Filch. A Quirrel. Several students. It was a great group, and completely full.

The movie was amazing! Awesome! It had the perfect balance, I think, between the weirdness that is adolescence mixed with the seriousness of the rise of a wizard who could destroy the world. I’d just finished rereading the book yesterday afternoon, so there were some scenes that I was expecting to go differently, but I think they went as well as they needed to. It was a movie after all, not a book.

And the way they built the scenes, incredible. The silence that filled not only the movie but the theater at one point was almost thick enough to touch. And I found myself feeling emotionally for some of the characters that I never thought I would.

I can’t wait to see it again.

They think I know stuff!

There is an entry in the class catalogue for the second summer term that looks like this:

class

See that name on the right? That’s my name. I’m teaching this class. WOW!

I’ve been grading for this class during the last school year. Part of that included guest lecturing a few times. On one of those times I was observed, the next day they offered me the position of teaching it during the summer. Apparently they thought I knew what I was talking about that day. A few weeks later they also asked me to teach it during next Spring semester starting in January. They must really think I know what I’m talking about.

So starting today I get to try and teach a whole semester’s worth of information in just 23 days. Should be quite the whirlwind.

So if I’m a bit sparse or scattered over the next few weeks, you’ll know why. (I already went to church yesterday wearing one black shoe and one brown shoe. They are the same style so I didn’t notice till the last hour.) Hopefully my fourteen students will be nice.

The intrigue grows

Over two years ago I first came across the Vibram FiveFinger shoes. Now today I saw a review of them in Wired Magazine. I am sufficiently intrigued that I really think I could give these a try. I mean, our feet had to evolve this way because they were good to get us around. Why not let them do what they’re supposed to do? Protecting them from asphalt in 100+ heat of course.

A sewing milestone

Categories: Quilting/Sewing/Knitting/Crafting

Yesterday I crossed a line I never thought I’d see.

Last August I wrote out a list of all the sewing projects I had in my house. I ordered them by when I should probably have them done and if they were for me or for Christmas or for somebody else. There were a lot of things on my list. As I finished them I moved them to the end of the list and crossed them off. I’ve added things here and there as stuff has come up as well. So now there are 51 things on the list.

As of yesterday I’ve crossed the line where more than half of the things on the list are crossed off. Woo hoo!!! :woot: Twenty-seven things are crossed off, twenty-four left to do. And some of those are Christmas ideas for the next few years. So I’m way ahead of the game on that one.

This is a very good feeling. There are 9 things left on my priority sewing list for this year. Three of those just need some finishing touches, two of them are my dresses for my wedding, two are for Christmas this year (yes, I’m almost half way through my Christmas projects for this year!). This is a doable list. I like it.

Now the challenge will be to keep it a small list and to get a lot more things crossed off before I start adding new things.

One week!

One week! :woot:

This was me at the midnight showing of the last movie. This time I should have a green cat with me.

So excited!!!!

I’m half way through re-reading the book right now. I should have it finished by then.
