I received the following email last week. For some reason, it made me laugh.

Dear Wasatch Front BYU Alumni,

I would like to invite you to enroll in Take a Cougar to Lunch sponsored by BYU’s Student Alumni Association.

This online program pairs current BYU students with local alumni professionals, in their field, for a mentoring lunch paid for by the professional. Please visit http://lunch.byu.edu to find out more about the program.

M~~~~~~ K~~~, a BYU senior majoring in business, recently went to lunch with a local professional. After the experience she said, “This lunch helped me to realize exactly what opportunities are available in my field. I now know more clearly what I want to do and how to get there.”

If you are interested in enrolling in the program, please visit http://lunch.byu.edu.

Yours,
C~~~~ G~~~~~~~~~
President, BYU Student Alumni Association

I wonder if they would consider McDonald’s a professional lunch. That’s about what would be in my budget. I took a BYU and a U of U alumnus out for dinner Saturday night in an effort to promote friendly relationships between the two schools though.

I got the same email. It made me laugh for different reasons. I figured that they wouldn’t want me to take one of their students out to lunch, because one of the first things I’d “go off” on would be BYU’s lack of compassion/understanding for young married students.

While a student there, I got nothing but grief about the lighter course load I was taking. I was told to graduate in four years, to not put off having children, and not to go into debt.

I’m sorry, but it’s next-to-impossibl for a young married person with children to take a full-time credit load, pay for it, work full-time and more to pay for life on top of school, get good enough grades to progress in one’s program, and still have time to visit one’s “school widow” and “orphan.”

I hated BYU’s attitudes about that. That’s why I’ll never donate to BYU in any way, shape, or form. And since this is just another strange form of donation to BYU, they can count me OUT.

So, Did you eat dinner by yourself 🙂 or were other alumni envolved. 🙂 And you should take an ed major to McDonalds because for a school teacher that is a power lunch you can afford.
