Moved

Categories: Books, Life

I’m moved. Settled in will be a different story. An amazingly good-looking gentleman is letting me use the internet at his house today. I hope to have it at my place in another week. (Note, said gentleman is the one who thinks he is amazingly good-looking and added that in. And since this is his computer, I guess I’ll let him.)42D

But I am alive. More details to follow.

And for those who were interested – there were 20 boxes of books, but I think I’m still missing one.

Winter camping

Categories: Life

It feels like I am camping in my own house. It’s below freezing and snowing outside. So I think camping inside is a good idea right now. I have my sleeping bag on an air mattress in my bedroom. The only thing to sit on, other than the floor, is a camp chair I pulled out of my trunk. And the last two nights I’ve had stars above me while I slept too, but those are coming down right now. Next time I move I need to remember to take down the stars before I pack away all my chairs. I’ve actually been quite comfortable on the air mattress. I was a bit worried about that. I get to camp like this for two more nights, and then we’ll have to make sure the bed is one of the first things to get unpacked.

Today I have been running around and making phone calls and getting all of my errands run that needed to be taken care of during business hours. There were a lot of them. But they are all done now. The only thing left is cleaning and returning the books I’ve borrowed from various people. One of my errands was to pay a fine at the library. It’s from the Summer of 2006, and came to a total of 50 cents, but I wanted to make sure I paid it before I left. The librarian thought I was funny. I don’t want to be haunted by that 50 cents.

I’m not sure when I’ll get internet set up in my new place. So for a while the blog might be all I will be updating.

Thoughts on packing

Categories: Random

This is a list of some of the odd thoughts that cross my mind as I’m packing.

  • Just how many Sharpies am I going to misplace doing this?
  • There is a lot of ocean on the world.
  • Wow. All you have to do is clear the bookcases and take everything off the walls and it really doesn’t look like a home any more.
  • And the pliers are…
  • The packing tape is…
  • Not misplacing the tape every other box would really help this go faster.
  • It’s probably a fire hazard to have the boxes stacked in front of the door like that.
  • It’s not going to fit. It’s not going to fit. It’s not going to fit. It’s not going to fit.
  • How’d they get it to all fit?
  • It doesn’t look like my house any more.

Hit the year running

Categories: Exercise, Family

I’ve decided to go for a midnight run of several miles and then come home and drink hot tea and take a bubble bath to warm up from having gone running in 12 degree weather.

Holiday running is kind of fun. I went on July 4th after the fireworks. I ran on Halloween instead of staying home and handing out candy. My dad and I went out Christmas day before dinner. I remember one New Year’s when I was back in high school that my dad and I went for a New Years Eve run as well. I even remember hearing about a New Years Eve race where you start whenever you want as long as you’ve timed it so that everyone crosses the finish line at midnight.

I think I’m going to start at midnight though. We have a tradition in my family of watching the ball drop and then opening the front door and yelling “Happy New Year” to the street. A couple years ago the street answered back. I’ll let that moment be the start of my run.

I’m going to start 2008 running, literally, and we’ll see how the year goes from there. Maybe I can end 2008 with a kiss, since I’m not going to be starting it that way.

A toast

As we say good-bye to 2007 and hello to 2008, I was thinking of a few toasts I could make tonight.

  • Here’s to being poorer than a part-time school teacher, but in a warmer climate!
  • Here’s to sewing fabric instead of buying it.
  • May treasured friendships never grow old.
  • To running fast and running far.

I’ll have to think of a few more. What would you toast tonight?

Rights, Honors, and Responsibilities

Categories: Education

My diploma for my Masters degree arrived in the mail. I actually wasn’t expecting it for a while still, considering how long it took them to do some of the other paperwork. What struck me about the document though was what has been conferred on me along with the degree, namely the rights, honors, and responsibilities associated with the degree. It’s the word “responsibilities” in particular that stood out. It seems like my mind was expecting the word “privileges” there instead. I’ll have to ponder some on what exactly my responsibilities are now that I have this degree.

Merry Christmas

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:
and the government shall be upon his shoulder:
and his name shall be called Wonderful,
Counsellor,
The mighty God,
The everlasting Father,
The Prince of Peace.

I wish everyone the peace that comes from the Babe whose birth we celebrate today.
