Moving Meditation

Categories: Exercise, Musings

When most people think of meditation, I’m sure they think of sitting still in a quiet room with your eyes closed. And there are times when I enjoy doing that. It’s part of why I do yoga, to help me find quiet and center. But if I really want to clear my thoughts, sort through them and make sense of them, sitting still doesn’t quite do it for me the same way running does.

I’ve also been trying to figure out what the difference between working out inside and outside is for me. Because there is a difference. I hate, dread, despise running on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike. It’s so pointless. You don’t get anywhere. You don’t see anything. That’s exercise.

But when I’m outside, it’s not exercise. It’s not a chore to be crossed off some to-do list. It’s pausing. It’s reflecting. It’s recharging. It’s refreshing. It’s calming. It really is my meditation.

And yes, I figured that out on my 3 mile run through the streets tonight.

Election Day

Categories: Education, Politics

I have just one thing to say today.

That is all.

Oh, and don’t forget to vote.

Monday, Monday. Can’t Help That Day

Categories: Life

I swear it was just Monday a day or two ago. It doesn’t seem like it’s been a whole week since the last time it was Monday. I don’t think I’m ready for it to be Monday again. Can it be maybe Wednesday instead? It’s November even. October went by too fast. The last week went by too fast. I need a nap.

Journal Writing

Categories: Books, Gospel, Musings

When I was eleven, I set a goal to write in my journal daily for three months. It took several months to accomplish it, but once I did, I didn’t stop writing daily till shortly after I turned 21, which was actually a very bad time in my life to stop. I wish I had more recorded from that time. Since then it has been kind of hit or miss when I write. Lately I have liked writing weekly on Sunday. Today while I was doing it, I thought back to how I have changed, both my person and my writing, simply through writing down my thoughts and actions with some type of regularity.

When I first started, I would mainly list what I did each day. I also knew that a paragraph is everything that is about one idea, and since everything I wrote each day was about what I did that day, I included it all in one paragraph, even if that paragraph extended over more than one page. I did not think I needed to break up each individual thing from that day into its own paragraph. My writing skills have improved as I’ve regularly used them, and now I would go back and tell myself a bit more about paragraphs.

My journal entries now rarely include a shopping list type description of what I have done. Rather, I write about themes, feelings, thoughts, troubles and their solutions. I think not writing every day lets me notice patterns more in my life and then I can write about the whole pattern, I can write about the larger picture because I can see it better rather than being stuck in the middle of it still and writing only about disconnected parts. Of course if I let too much time go between entries, I lose a lot of those patterns as well. Weekly seems to work right now.

And I’ve noticed that waiting until I’m on the end of a trial helps me to better see the purpose of it, and what I record from my trials now is more of a positive experience and what I gained from it rather than the doom and despair you can feel in the midst of a trial. I write my journal now for my own benefit so that I do not forget the lessons I have learned. But I also want others to read it to not think that my life was full of misery. I want them to see that I did enjoy my life, and while there are parts that might not be full of joy, I have taken something from those parts and added them to me.

Another thing about my journals is that I take a lot of time picking out the book I will be writing in, and I am very particular about the pens I use as well. For probably nine years now I have used books that do not have lines in them. I do not want to be confined in my writing by pre-determined lines. I want my mood to be able to indicate how big or little my writing is. I want to be able to add little things here and there to make my writing more interesting. I want the look of my journal, not just what is written in it, to reflect me and who I am when I write. My journal is me, on paper, and that’s a big responsibility for that book. At least I like to think so.

Cleaning

Categories: Family, Life, Random

My mom is probably going to laugh at this post. And in all honesty, I would’ve laughed at it ten years ago or so as well. But I like having everything clean. I feel so much better when my house is clean and organized and there isn’t clutter every where. I like having a clean and clutter free car too, especially since I’ve been spending so much time in my car the last couple of years.

It doesn’t naturally happen that way. I don’t come home and immediately hang up my coat and put my shoes in the closet. My dishes aren’t washed right after I use them. But every now and then I’ll go through and put everything away and do a general cleaning. And I feel so much better afterwards. It’s like my physical surroundings reflect my mental state, and when my house is in order, my thoughts are in order as well.

It’s the same with my desk at work. If everything is in a place, even if it is just a designated pile for that kind of whatever that I will go through later, I feel more in control. I feel better when my desk is cleared off. I work better.

Now, I should probably go do some dishes, or at least stack all the plates together and all the cups together and all the bowls together… and then they will look organized and I can wash them later.

Blog – A Mission Statement

Categories: Random, Science & Tech

I have felt recently as if I needed to expound upon the reason for this blog in an effort to explain some of the policies and procedures associated with it.

I started this blog in January 2006 as part of an assignment for one of my first Masters classes. The rest of my website has been around since October 2003. The website was started for a variety of reasons. I wanted a place where friends and family could read and see what I was up to. I also wanted a place where I could keep track of all the books I’ve read and share them with others. I love when I see in my stats that someone has found the book section of my site.

The tag line for this blog is: All the random things that make me giggle, and some that don’t. This blog is, and always has been, a collection of the random thoughts that run through my head throughout the day. It is a place for me to record those thoughts and perhaps make them sit down and stay for a while so that I may explore them a little more in depth.

I appreciate the comments of others. A lot of the times I feel like I am talking to myself here because I can’t be sure that anyone is reading my thoughts. And that is just fine. I am generally not looking to get into deep philosophical discussions on this blog. Comments are just that, comments. If I were looking for more of a discussion type forum, I would create a message board where ideas could be discussed in a more organized fashion.

A blog is something that is posted, and then you move on. I do not dwell on past thoughts that I have blogged about. Right now I am especially grateful that I can get my frustrations about politics out, and then move on. I would hope that nobody else is dwelling on my thoughts either. If you feel like commenting, do so, know that it will generally be appreciated, and then move on.

With regards to this website, we shall take the following as our definitions:

discussion: n. 1. Consideration of a subject by a group; an earnest conversation. 2. A formal discourse on a topic; an exposition.

comment: n. 1. A remark, observation. 2. A note in explanation or expansion.

One final note. This is my domain (bad pun). I am in charge here. The thoughts expressed here are mine. And I reserve the right to do whatsoever I feel like doing while I am here. And, as stated above, this is not open for discussion.

Thoughts on costumes and candy

Categories: Random

Most people erroneously assume that Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I enjoy dressing up, but I find many different opportunities to do so all throughout the year. I enjoy candy, particularly chocolate, but I don’t need a set holiday to find reason for that. A Tuesday is reason enough to eat chocolate.

For various reasons, I did not buy any candy to hand out yesterday. I actually went for my run later in the evening so I ended up not being home for about an hour during the trick-or-treat time anyway. But as I was running, I tried to figure out what the point of trick-or-treating is anyway. I think it’s kind of pointless. Why go door-to-door getting candy you probably don’t like, when you can just go to the store and buy the kind you really do like? And with things getting more and more scary all the time, you can buy candy you trust. Sure, it’s fun to dress up and show off your costumes, but that’s what parties are for.

By the end of my run I’d almost decided I don’t think my kids will go trick-or-treating. I’ll dress them up and go visit friends, but I don’t think they need to go bother random neighbors. I don’t know that I’ll buy candy to give to random people who knock on my door either. There were some kids standing at my door when I got home from my run, and they walked right up to me with their bags held out before I’d even gotten to my door. I thought that was very rude.

Meh. I just don’t understand Halloween I guess.
