It’s the Olympics!!

I love the Olympics. I can never get enough. And this year, for the very first time, I have cable to watch them with. There are three stations that will be carrying it. And one of them will be doing 16 hours live! I can watch the Olympics starting at 1am and watch live for 15-16 hours each day. That’s a lot of Olympics!

The Opening Ceremonies were wonderful last night. These are my thoughts as we watched.

I have an affinity for Britain owing to my Anglo-Saxon heritage. I loved the history aspect of the program, the pastoral start with real grass moving to the industrial revolution.

The Queen’s participation and arrival.

The children’s literature with Voldemort and J.K. Rowling. And real doctors and nurses.

The performance of “Chariots of Fire” made me all misty, that is until it made me laugh.

I really liked all the drums.

I like the flag bearers wearing native dress. The Netherlands had tulips on their jackets. The colored Solomon Island goatee. What are those children carrying? Must have missed that explanation when we were out watching the monsoon storm.

Watching beach volleyball in 2008, one of the commentators made reference to the Paleozoic era, because clearly they played beach volleyball back then. I can’t wait to see what weird things come out of the commentators’ mouths this time. Maybe Amanda and I can even sit on the same couch and watch the Olympics together that way this year.

Brett thinks the controversy around the US outfits would be avoided if we went back to having the Olympics in the nude (as he thought they were going to be two years ago). Brett wants to see the Queen cheering wildly and her well set hair going everywhere.

Speculation about the pace of the parade of nations because the Queen is old and needs to go to bed.

Doves riding bicycles.

I LOVE the look from inside the cauldron looking up. And I REALLY like the generations bridging aspect of the cauldron lighting.

What does it say about me when I got more excited about JK Rowling than I did the Queen? 😀

I don’t know, Mama G, but please don’t get so excited that you name him-who-should-not-be-named like your daughter did.

You must admit the James Bond clip was clever. :brett:

In the words of Hermione: Fear of the name only increases fear of the thing itself. :owl:

    (Why can’t I reply to Lisa’s reply?)

Lisa, I think Hermione was quoting Dumbledore when she said it.

You are right. Hermione was quoting Dumbledore. My bad for quoting the secondary source and not the primary source.

I think you would get points off in your dissertation if you did that.

It is definitely not encouraged. Which is how I keep falling down the rabbit hole of research.

I love the Olympics and I also can’t get enough of them. We had the Venter reunion last night so Kim taped the events. I am excited to watch the tape.

Finally finished watching the taped opening last night! Man, that industrial revolution section was DARK. It was way bleaker than any other opening ceremony program I’ve ever seen… but props to the Brits for not sugarcoating the grim transformation of the landscape.

Thinking back to previous Opening Ceremonies, they try to celebrate the great achievements of the country. The Industrial Revolution was a definite major achievement, but it wasn’t a beautiful one. It was dark and dismal and it was such a visual representation of that.
