Reason #37 to own a glue gun

You can make pom pom guys late at night.

I just finished making 33 colorful pom pom guys with wiggly eyes. Tomorrow I get to put foam feet on them and then velcro them to the computers in my lab.

And this makes perfect sense. I promise. And not just to people who are up too late and are extremely tired and are really wondering how insane they were to give themselves the schedule they have.

You can close the holes in the bathroom that the ants are coming through late at night. Because what normal person keeps chaulk stuff around all the time?

I’m rereading a book I haven’t read in years, probably almost 10. A line in it just struck me as the funniest thing I’ve read in a while.

Guys need to feel strong and masculine now that they’ve been replaced by electricity.

I can’t explain exactly why I find that so funny, but it’s going to make me laugh for the next while every time I turn on the light.

I’m allergic to work

Categories: Happy Things, Work

After such a busy week with work and school, today was just a day to relax and play. And it was the first day all week that my shoulder hasn’t bothered me. I think that means I’m allergic to work. But my happy thought today is that at least I have a job where I get time off on a regular basis.

Makes Me Smile

Categories: Happy Things

It always seems like it is the most simple things in life that make me smile. It’s one of the things I like about me.

Today my happy thoughts are scrolly mice (for computers) and black-eyed susans on the side of the freeway in the bright sunshine on my way home from class tonight.

Yesterday evening there was a bit of a rainbow in the south part of Utah County as I rounded the point of the mountain. And the sunset was a beautiful pink/orange. And then there was a thunder shower with the gentle thunder and the smell of rain.

It truly is a gift to be simple.

Proposal for a new word

I make no secret of the fact that I am disappointed with the English language and often feel restricted with it’s limited vocabulary. There just aren’t enough words to describe all the thoughts and feelings I have.

Today, while discussing a certain situation with a friend, I said that the situation made me feel “disappreciated.” And then I realized that isn’t the correct term. Most people would say “unappreciated” or even “under appreciated.” But we agreed that “disappreciated” would probably be more appropriate. It seems to imply more action on the part of the other person. It also implies that they did appreciate you at some point, and now they don’t any more. You could say that someone who loses their job as a result of restructuring/budget cuts/layoffs, or whatever the term is these days, was disappreciated by the company.

So today I was not unappreciated by certain people/organizations. Rather, I was disappreciated.

At least I know there are plenty of other people in the same place who really do appreciate me and consider me irreplaceable.

Back to School

Last Wednesday I drove up to the University of Utah to get a new parking permit for the new school year. I also got my bus pass and bought three of the now 8 books I need for my four classes, half of which are just for one class. It was strange to think that, if they offer the right classes at the right time, I could have a Master’s degree before that parking permit expires. That is just so very strange.

I have managed to get all but three of my books for under $25. Two of my books are about $30. And the last book, which really isn’t a book at all, but is just xeroxed copies of a whole slew of articles that were bound together, is $45. That’s just sickening to me. And I can’t get it cheaper anywhere else because it isn’t a book, it’s a two inch thick “packet” that was made specifically for our class by our professor. (Can you still call it a packet if it has an appendix?) The monopoly of the business was just eating at me today over that. I considered for a minute just taking the very well cited sources of everything in the packet and looking them up myself. After thinking about that idea for a little bit though, I decided the $45 was the cost of the convenience of having it all already in one place. That still doesn’t make it seem any better that I spent that much for a cheap bound xerox book when I only spent $15 for a text book I’m really interestsed in and excited about.

One nice thing about taking so many classes this semester, I have to leave work on time every day. School lets out at 3:30 and I can leave at 3:45. If just one person stops me on my way out the door to talk for a minute or two, I’m late for class. That will be nice. Because without that I can easily stay till 5:00 every night. I’m really going to have to keep up with my grade book this year because I won’t have time to play catch-up.

Every so often when I am up at the University of Utah campus, I think to myself that maybe I should get a U of U patch or something (I collect patches). But my heart just won’t let me do it. I can get a degree from the U, but my heart will always belong to the Y. There is no doubt my blood runs blue.
