Where to start?

I rented for seven years after college. There is not a whole lot of decorating you can do when you are renting. But I don’t rent any more. I can hang as many things as I want on the walls. And Brett lets me decorate our house. In fact, when we told his parents we were getting married they said they had one thing to ask me, they wanted me to get Brett furniture. The amazing thing is, we took the furniture I had in my 600 square foot apartment and it expanded to fill our entire house.

I’ve been watching a lot of HGTV lately. Which may or may not be a good thing. It is certainly inspiring. I particularly enjoy the shows that show how you can make a big difference in a short amount of time with a limited budget. It doesn’t require a contractor and thousands of dollars to design a space. Which is good, because we don’t have thousands of dollars for decorating.

We were just commenting the other day that between the hammock and the fire pit in our backyard now, we’re using our backyard a whole lot more this year than we did last year. The hammock I already had and I spent about $20 on the fixtures to hang it. And IBM gave Brett the fire pit as his choice of gifts for working there for 10 years. Small simple changes that made a big difference.

I’ve already drawn up a new set-up for the furniture in our bedroom that will include a sitting area under the window. We just need to get some energy to move everything.

I have a few plants/bushes I want to put in our yard as well as a raised garden bed and a vine lined area for cornhole down the side of the house.

And the kitchen. My ideas for the kitchen change almost weekly. I’ve added cork boards to the pantry door and I love them. Our pantry and hall closet doors are an odd skinny size, but they are the perfect width for these cork squares.

Then I got to have fun finding and printing photos to put on the cork boards. I put up a few of the flowers from our wedding too. The cork boards came with sticky squares, but I found that getting out the stable gun worked a lot better to keep them where I wanted them.

And I’ve learned about magnetic paint that lets you turn any surface into a magnetic board. I’m going to have lots of fun with that. And chalkboard paint. And … :woot:

And of course, there will always be quilts in our decorating plans. We’ll use a lot of the ones I’ve already made, but there might be a reason to make a few more. 😉

Until we actually start anything, everything is subject to change. Especially if I keep watching design shows.

The longer you watch design shows, the longer we can put off the real work.

    Watch on. :brett:

    Current ideas from this week.

A barrel light from wire garden fencing, a light kit, and fabric strips that the show made for $35 and is definitely something I could make.

A wall of bookshelves with a library ladder along the tall wall in our family room. That would definitely be more than $35. So we’ll sit on that one a lot more before we do anything about that.
