In the spirit of Brad Paisley’s song “Letter to Me,” I thought I’d write a letter to the me who just woke up on this date last year.

Dear Me,

Despite jokes about your sleep habits, you slept well last night (might have been the good food from last night) and woke up at 6am feeling awake and ready to go. And you are. Even with all of the things that will happen in just the next year that you are not expecting, you are ready for this.

I’m really happy with how you are going to handle the whole day. Sure a few things are not going to go the way you would’ve wanted them to, but none of those will stand out today and none of them are that big of a deal today, partially because you won’t let them be a big deal.

The snow storm that is coming in, it’s going to be one of your favorite parts of the day. You’ll be cold, but you can always warm up again. And even though the humidity is going to make all the curl you will spend all morning putting in your hair fall before the reception, and you know it will do that, Brett is still going to be telling you how lovely you looked the whole day long a year later, and it’s still going to make your heart flutter every time he does it. So good for you for not worrying about it.

The details have mattered. Well, at least the details you cared about. Your living room is decorated with your flowers. The turtles are sitting on a shelf with some pictures. And you do regularly listen to the music from last night and tonight. And Grandpa will be there to see you get married and see you so happy. And that is going to mean even more later.

You are going to smile more than you’ve ever smiled before today. But don’t worry, your cheeks aren’t going to hurt at the end of the night.

Just roll with the day. You’re good at that, and it’s really going to be what you need to do today. Roll with it, and enjoy it. And know that it’s just a small taste of what will come in the next year. This day will be one to remember.

As to the coming year, life will continue to have its ups and downs. But being together helps soften the rough spots. And so far, everything is working out. What more do you need to know than that?

With love,
You, a year later
