It’s not that I don’t like Christmas music. It’s more that I don’t like Christmas music on the radio. I have to avoid an entire station here after Thanksgiving (which is better than Utah were there are two stations after Thanksgiving, and one of them starts November 1st – 1/6th of their year is Christmas music!).
But I do absolutely love Christmas music. So instead of subjecting myself to the radio, I have a “station” on Pandora that I’ve put together that is all instrumental Christmas music. It’s absolutely lovely. So many fun arrangements and so peaceful. Christmas music has a peace that other music just quite can’t achieve. And I have a bunch of CDs that I love to play this time of year.
And asking me to pick a favorite is an impossible question to answer. Away in a Manger. Silent Night. O Holy Night. Carol of the Bells. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. What Child is This. We Three Kings. Good King Wenceslas. There are so many good ones.
I spent two Christmases in Brasil as a missionary. The second year the missionaries who were in the city put together a Christmas choir and went around town singing at different places. They also put together a CD of the songs. I was outside the city at the time and didn’t participate. But I did come home with a CD. And it is one of my favorite to listen to at Christmas time. Particularly this song. It’s a Portuguese version of “The Shepherd” from Michael McLean’s The Forgotten Carols. And it’s just beautiful.
What are your favorite Christmas songs? What arrangements of them do you love the most?

Okay, I really like O Holy Night sung by Celine Dion. Good thing I moved to Quebec, right? 🙂
That is a good one.
I love the traditional stuff that hasn’t been pop-ified. I DESPISE radio Christmas music… Leave well-enough alone, I say. The world could do with a little less “Feliz Navidad.” 🙂
Carol of the Bells (particularly Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s version), O Holy Night (if it’s good, there are some crap arrangements/singers out there), and I Want a Hippopotamus For Christmas because it’s just good fun.
I <3 Christmas music.
