A “piece” of Olympic history?

I got an email from NBC offering me a “piece of Olympic history.” I think they need a lesson on what that means. Because what they are offering is a DVD of Phelps’ swimming events. Which is not a piece of history. It’s like saying my 7th grade history book was a piece of New Mexican history.

A piece of the Berlin wall is a piece of history. Phelps’ swimming shorts are a piece of Olympic history. Unless Phelps had these DVDs stuffed down said shorts while he was swimming in the Olympics, they are not a piece of Olympic history. Vials of pool water Phelps swam in are pieces of Olympic history. There are limited quantities of pieces of history. There are only so many dentures George Washington used. If you can make more of it then it isn’t a piece of history. If it wasn’t actually at the historic event then it wasn’t a piece, a part, of the historic event.

Speaking of that pool, I caught the Russian pairs synchronized swimming team’s artistic performance. My goodness that was hauntingly beautiful! The athletic ability it takes to do that, while holding your breath, is incredible. And it was so artistic too. That’s a sport I will never try, but I did enjoy watching it. Also, just what kind of make-up do those swimmers use? Because it does not smear at all given how wet they get.

I knew they had rowing and kayak slalom in the Olympics, but I don’t think I’ve seen canoe sprinting before today. I think I find the canoe single not as exciting as the rest. But I’ll give it a chance. The kayak sprint isn’t so bad though. Kayaking apparently takes more leg strength than you’d first expect.

Watching the Canadian women’s soccer player in the second over time have her knee bent backwards like that in slow motion made me cringe. Oh my goodness I hurt for her. That did not look good at all. But she managed to walk off the field, get some water, and keep going. All those players are going to feel this game tomorrow.

It’s amazing to me how many things have come down to over time or sudden death or a shoot out or a jump off or a hundredth of a second. Way to be exciting Olympics!

I was impressed that the winning point in the soccer game was made with a head shot. That I could never do. NBC is giving you a 2012 pin with the dvds maybe that is enough history for them. πŸ™‚

I agree that Michael Phelps has the most medals of any Olympic athlete but I don’t think that he is the world’s top athlete. He had opportunity to gain numerous medals in each Olympics that he participated in. A lot of the athletes only have one chance at a medal.

I do not like the example Phelps setting after the Olympics. After the first one he was arrested for drunk driving, after the second Olympics he was arrested for marajauna (not sure how to spell it). I feel like the top athlete in the world should be a better example to the young hero worshipers.

Very true. There will never be an Olympic marathoner with 20 medals. But they are definitely up there with the top athletes. :run:

Ah, and there’s the rub — the ad doesn’t say, “own a piece of OLYMPIC history.” It just says “own a piece of history.” By that standard, I’m pretty sure it qualifies. :brett:

      And you are comment #2,500!!

True. But that’s as boring a piece of history. Just as boring as my 7th grade history book. :lisa:

The lint I pulled out of the drier this morning is a piece of history too. Do you want it? :lisa:

I was doing laundry while I watched the Olympics. Surely that makes it part of Olympic history. πŸ˜‰

Which is more interesting — drier lint or your 7th grade history book? :brett:

You could light them both on fire. So maybe it’s a tie? :lisa:

(Note, I do not condone book burning.)

Still, I think I prefer book burning to laundry room burning.

(Sorry, sensitive topic in your family, isn’t it?)

Drier lint is actually a very good fire starter to take camping and keep in your emergency supply kit. You just need to keep it out of your drier vent so that it only catches fire when you want it to. :lisa:

πŸ˜€ Geesh, I burn up one load of laundry in the drier 25 years ago, and no one lets me forget it. :woot: :woot:
