An unexpected problem

This might seem like a strange problem to have, but I haven’t had a kidney stone in a year now.

It was a year ago today that I called Brett up in the worst pain of my life and he came and took me to the ER where they did a CT scan and told me I had several stones in both kidneys. I still believe that it was an angel that turned Brett’s phone on that morning because his phone is never on.

If I have stones in there, why aren’t they coming out?

See. This is the problem. I know they are there. And they’re going to have to come out at some point. It’s the not knowing when that gets a little weird some times.

I mean, I’m grateful that they didn’t come out during our wedding. Getting married on morphine didn’t seem like a good idea. I’m grateful they didn’t come out during our two honeymoon trips. If they would’ve moved during my marathon in December I don’t know if I would’ve noticed since my knee and hip were hurting so bad and my toe was turning into one giant blister. And I’m grateful they haven’t moved around during our travels this summer.

But geez! Just when are they going to come out?

Brett still married me, even after having to clean up after me throwing up twice and seeing me look like death with bed hair, wrinkled pjs, and knocked out on pain killer. We still laugh about it. That was quite the morning. There’s just no telling when we’ll have another one like it. It’s like having two ticking bombs inside of me. And I have no idea what the clock says on either of them.

Depending on the particular chemistry in your kidneys, it takes anywhere from a few months to a few years for a “clinically significant” kidney stone to form. So the several stones in both kidneys that you have are likely to have been developing for a good long time.

I had a kidney stone in November, 2008. They didn’t tell me that there was another, even larger stone lurking in the other kidney. That one led to the most expensive day of my life in May, 2009. This doesn’t count all of the other stones that are probably too small to see on regular x-rays. I’ve never had a CT scan or an MRI of my kidneys. I’m afraid to.

I know the feeling all too well though. I don’t worry about IF I’m going to have another kidney stone. I worry about WHEN it’s going to happen.

And I’ll be worrying about that for the rest of my life. 😥

The ER did the CT scan as a way to diagnose what was wrong with me. Other than what they told me I have no idea what they found. They did indicate that the ones they saw were small enough to pass on their own. But I have no idea what the stones are made of. If I had a regular primary care physician I’d probably be talking to them about the CT results and what to do next. I guess we just wait till the next one.

I’m not sure either, but if it starts saying “tick-tock, tick-tock, brrrrrinnnng” we might need to find a different sleeping arrangement. :brett:

If you’re really worried, you could find a regular primary care physician and ask said PCP to requisition your CT report and talk about it.

Or, you could be like me and be really worried and STILL not do anything about it. 🙂 😆

We’ve been thinking we should probably get a PCP some time in the near future anyway. I just need to add it to my list of things to do. I’m not really expecting anything to be done about it at this point, but it might be nice to have one person with all the related records when it happens again.

That must be such a scary feeling! I would be freaked out.

I might have spoken too soon. Either a small one moved during class last week or else I was having a visceral reaction to what that guy was saying. The pain and nausea were gone within two hours that time. Nothing bad enough to send me to the doctor at least.
