Fabric Postcards

The latest craze in sewing - fabric postcards!
And they actually get mailed too.
This will be my gallery.

How to Make a Fabric Postcard DebR Style

July 4, 2007
I used the same fabric for the background on all of these and then used my scrapbook stencils to cut out blue and white stars for each. I used a red satin stitch around the stars and the postcard.
For Mom & Dad
February 11, 2007
This one was for my parents. Upon first looking at it my mom thought it was cute that I'd found a checkerboard pattern. She said she was half way back to the house from the mail box before she realized I'd pieced it.
For Ryan
February 11, 2007
I sent this one to my brother. He didn't say much about it. Although he did call me and ask about doing laundry in the São Paulo MTC a few days later. He remembers that we had clean clothes there, but can't remember how we got them.
For Brett

Another monkey, again for Brett. It got this response from him:
"Somehow they followed me even though I packed and moved my home,
No matter what, they come and they come, they won't leave me alone.
Another monkey in the mail could make me lose my mind,
But look at me shuffling through the stack until I finally find..."
You like it? I just made it up.
For Anjuli & Tyler
February 11, 2007
I sent this one to Anjuli and Tyler. Anjuli said she'll put this one on the fridge so they'll see it more often then the one she has at her desk at school.
Valentine Postcards
February 11, 2007
The complete set of four Valentine postcards that I mailed out in 2007. I made them all at the same time and they went real fast. The background is one inch finished squares that I strip pieced together and then stitched-in-the-ditch to the pellon. I didn't fuse the grid to the pellon first, and it worked out pretty well. The appliqués all were fussy cut from a Valentine fabric and are all stitched down with a small zigzag.

July 21, 2006
This one, again with the monkey, was for Brett. And it got some real great comments on a quilting message board I post on.
The handcart is because July 24th celebrates the pioneers arriving in Utah. And the funny thing in the handcart, a pi sign, is because the 22nd of July, or 22/7, is "approximate pi day." Pi is a mathematical symbol that is roughly equal to the fraction 22/7.
The wheel was zigzagged. The other parts were blanket stitched.
For my mom and dad
July 13, 2006
This postcard was mailed to my parents because my mom wanted a fabric postcard. And we love Harry Potter.
I bought the Harry Potter fabric in 2002 I think and hadn't done anything with it because I wasn't sure what would be a worthy project. The grey stitches in the background are a kind of metallic thread I bought for another project. The star was a purely happy accident. The appliqués are stitched down with a small zigzag.

Another monkey card for Brett. The song "Another Postcard with Chimpanzees" by BNL has a line about a going fishing chimp. And that was the whole reason for this postcard.
I sewed the wavy lines on the blue before putting the other pieces. The monkey, fish, and sandy bank are blanket stitched down. The red fishing pool is a piece of bias tape. I used a triple stitch to do the letters and fishing line.
Back to School - For Anjuli
July 13, 2006
I made this one for my sister. I didn't mail it till school started up again. She says she keeps it by her desk at school and looks at it whenever she can find her desk.
All of the fabrics were ones I had in my stash from probably about ten years ago. I sewed the decorative stitches down the rows of the background fabric before putting the other pieces on and blanket stitching around them.
For Mr. & Mrs. Dennis
July 13, 2006
This one was mailed to Brett's parents to thank them for inviting me to spend time with their entire family and inviting me to dinner.
The fabric is from the same quilt as before. I used rickrack sewn with a triple zigzag to hold the square down.
For Jenn
July 13, 2006
I mailed this one to Jenn to thank her and her roommates for letting me crash on their couch for three nights while I was exploring career opportunities in Arizona.
The fabric was a scrap from a baby quilt I made in 2001. I blanket stitched around the square and then did a star stitch in strategic places on the square.
For Tanya
June 21, 2006
I made this card as a thank you card for Tanya for bringing me crackers when I was real sick. So this one didn't get mailed.
The appliqués were cut from scraps of the quilt I made for Tanya's baby girl. I stitched the pink flowers down first by stitching random patterns around the whole card. The daffodil was stitched with yellow and green following the flower. The daffodil word and heart were satin stitched, and I did a concentric heart pattern inside the heart.
For Brett
June 19, 2006
This was the first fabric postcard I made. And I really had no idea what I was doing at the time, so I think it turned out pretty good. This one was for Brett's half birthday. Everything on it was picked for a certain reason. It was fun wandering the fabric store looking for the right fabrics.
The monkey, dolphin, and cactus are fussy cut. The balloons were free cut. I satin stitched everything down.
